" a lot I'm -- broaden the gentleman next to me is one of only six college basketball coaches who won more than 800 games he's twice been named coach of the year. He's taken his team to. Ten final four appearances were pleased to be joined by Duke head coach Mike just -- you -- coach I exercised Finneran good to have you didn't do realize you got a new book out reserve -- gold standard building a world class people question chronicles -- three years coaching. Team USA which of course when the gold medal this past summer in Beijing. Some of the things that you learn by coaching these guys in the Olympics wealth."
" With the very first thing is that they're as good as advertised in hand. Not just his players but as people they were. Never a problem for me. Or for any of the coaches 12. There are so cooperative and they were very very proud. Well playing for the United States which is a really neat thing. The team USA of course since had some problems you know recent. International competition. Including a third place finish at the 2004 Athens Games how much pressure was there do you as a coach and these players to win gold in Beijing. Well I think there's a lot of pressure you know that we will have enough. We've we live that life you know now when you place your country there's a whole new love pro level of pressure because your point against the world. But what we thought in putting this together Jerry Colangelo who he architect of this former owner of the Phoenix Suns -- we thought that. You don't just get twelve people and put them together and say thirteen any time. And so that -- came to three year commitments. And after. Putting that time then. The guys got to develop great relationships and we developed as -- as an outstanding team when you had a lot of talent on -- you have called me. LeBron. How are you able to to control these egos so to speak and get them to buy into what your -- Well that was a very hard today and again I think that's the most surprising thing when it. Did you hear the reaction of people how could that happen and and basically how could it not happen if you're playing for something that's worthwhile. You know we wanted them to have big egos we want them to have egos that they have with the Lakers are the -- Cavaliers. But -- to bring all those egos together and form one big ego. An eagle does that mean being arrogant. He go mean being confident about your abilities. Because while we want to win we also wanted to won the respect of our country. Fan and of the world cannot I think all three of the gold medal in those the respect. Of our country in the world that those three things were accomplished certainly made the country proud obviously you've accomplished so much in your coaching career. Three double -- titles. Numerous final four appearances your member of the basketball Hall of Fame where where does winning a gold medal rank with those other achievements. Right at the right up there you know I mean there's. There's really. No greater honor. -- offer coached and two coaches national team. And see -- have -- that flag go up and the anthem being played on the gold medals are being placed. Around your players snacks and I really believe that and the players would tell you the same thing. Now those who have won NBA championships and that that's great ten -- unbelievable but this is four year contract. You know you don't have Duke on there you don't have. The way curtains flew you know Cavaliers what you have is USA. And -- brings our country together when you think about it. The LA what team does our whole country get a chance to cheer for. Team USA you know -- can -- it's a unique opportunity and then you don't get a chance to do it every year. Right they do and they play soccer all over the world that this brings our country together and -- these guys were worthy of the support. -- our country gave them that was I was really probably correct me if I'm wrong as a coach -- Olympic team. You don't get a gold -- now do you have an extra -- if you would you like to know what used to a regular duplicate somewhere half and I think -- I think it's a good thing or Randy you. You know if you had a coach getting a gold medal for every time an athlete did won the gold. You know basketball coach Trevor -- Palin. He would water down the value. Of of what the Olympics is about the Olympics. Is all about the competitor. That individual competitor who won a gold. For the collective group of competitors that when a team gold can. I'm okay with that and they hung their medals around my neck for a little better they helped the so that was called we got rained this. So that was that was really good and the main thing is we have a lifelong. Memory of you know what we accomplish the end. The lifelong relationship. By the brotherhood that was formed as a result of being a champion. Being a champion is it is the best. Getting back to these players obviously these -- millionaire players what what multi positional type moment -- not. I don't doubt about it what's the biggest difference between coaching these guys as compared to college kids. Well the biggest difference is airmen didn't and they are professionals they get paid for what they do in college here. You're developing to become a man and you and I can paid for what you what you don't. There there that they are pros. And as a result you need to adapt your style of teaching. From what you do with the college she can't young men to what you do with the pro man. And they were unbelievably cooperative. In you have to be. Very very well prepared. Because they're prepared right like when you speak storm know what you're talking about not make it longer. Because they're always so it's not like they won't listen -- listen. But they -- not just like anybody they won't listen to someone who's not prepared and our staff was very very prepared. Everyone is well aware you're storied basketball program and Duke. Some a lot of people wondering do you really need to recruit I mean I don't think guys are power and a new door to play for coach -- do. Well I think there're a number of youngsters who were interest of that in today's day and age no one pounds on anyone's door. In the recruiting is very difficult and we can get. The number -- number of kids -- into our program pretty easily but do you get to kids. Who have a chance to win. A championship event for that that that group of youngsters. The competition for them is. It's very keen and unique it's a unique type of competition so. Now unless I have been there -- done. Knuckle marks on my door saying you know what me and I'm -- play for coach K well I'm going to put you on the spot here. Who's the best play you precocious -- that he won't put me on the spot because I won't have I didn't think you're going to but I thought -- NN. I've I've Brandi have had an opportunity code seven national players of the year. Again some players are great players that make national player of the year right Grant Hill and Bobby Hurley if it. We've had Kerry and wait and -- Dawkins and him Brandon. Williams Jason Williams and Battier and Dunleavy and all these guys. You're working guy and obviously I'm much better coach. As a result of coaching. You know outstanding talent just like anybody in the coaching profession. -- coach and serve I talk to those players they say their favorite coach for what -- favorite coaches is what what Randy they would say that because I controlled their playing time there you got better the only reason that serves always an ulterior motive there. Coach thanks for being when -- thank you we certainly appreciate that and once again the book is called the gold standard building a world class team. And it's available now for more basketball videos make you keep a log on to foxsports.com. For coach K are ready Sparage. Thanks look at him."
