" The reds biggest need remains a right handed hitting slugger. The team talked extensively to the White Sox west -- about Jermaine Dye. But the White Sox would be to fall out of contention in the AL central for that to happen and DL central that's pretty difficult to do. Here's an even more intriguing possibility. Matt Holliday. Moving back to the National League hitting -- great American ballpark both to be very advantageous to holiday. But here's the problem. The reds would need to take on the balance of his thirteen and a half million dollar salary they might not be in position to do that. When Gary Sheffield sign with the Mets I thought he might last only a month. Well not only was I wrong in the absence of Carlos Delgado Jeff figures to assume a much more prominent role. The Mets tried Jeremy Reed at first base on Friday night the roles are going to play Daniel Murphy there as well as Fernando Tatis. But what ever they do the Mets should have plenty of at bats for Jeff in the outfield. One thing the Mets are not planning on at least right now. The promotion of top prospect Fernando Martinez. Martinez is hitting well at AAA but he's still only 240 years old. The Mets or not going to promote him until they're convinced that he is ready to play every day. Good news for the angels' Vladimir Guerrero has been very active with his conditioning while recovering from a torn pectoral muscle. The Angels were worried that Guerrero might get out of shape while being on the DL stay so I don't. But let's face Guerrero has every reason to return it optimal conditions. He turns 35 next February he's a free agent at the end of the season. In case you haven't noticed in the current trend older players aren't exactly in -- Buster Posey is the Giants catcher of the future Bengie Molina is a free agent at the end of the season. Still the Giants can't be sure that Posey will be ready next year when he's still playing an able. Plus if the Giants lost believe there already weak offense would get even weaker. So as one team official put it to me this week the decision on Molina is very much an open question."
