" Coming up on coach speak with Brian Billick. Jack Del Rio thoughts about the difficulty making final cuts to start the season about the deck coach Mike Smith will discuss his relationship -- quarterback Matt Ryan."

" Had John -- Boggs plays out OT -- does become such an event supports. What Brian Billick will break down that tricky wildcat offense although."

" Have more coach speak when Bryant bill."

" It's coach -- I'm Brian Billick. Each week we're going to examine the hard hitting issues the National Football League that take place on the field. We're going to talk to wide variety of coaches each week you talked about the strategies and tactics the players the good and bad of what's going on on the field in the national football. In addition will focus on a specific theme this week we're going to talk about the relationship between head coach and owners. His coaches and his players our first guest on coach speak. As a coach that used to work me when I was with the Baltimore Ravens Jack Del Rio head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jack -- great -- really appreciate you taking the time to join us. -- as you know you you were great player in this league for a long time. But it has to coach coordinator. And head coach as you know it's all about relationships in this game. We saw we've seen something I can't remember three coordinators being fired pre season."

" I don't ever remember that happening. And talk a little bit about how tough it is as a head coach. Tell -- those types of decisions you've had let guys go I've let guys go talk a little bit about what you have to go through to get that. Right well first ball is very rare and unusual. To see it happen this close to the regular season having. Well forward actually played any games. That's a little bit unusual I think. As head coach as you know once you've come -- that that place where you think there's. You know the differences are two great the direction is not what you're looking for. In India feel like it's what you have to do with a good organization I think mr. duties as coach. To make that movements it's hard for me to really understand without you know without knowing the dynamics that were in play for those three. -- positions. But certainly very unusual when you evaluate your coaches just like you've been evaluated as a coach and half. You obviously want to give input from a lot of different places you know what's your players -- and other coaches. -- and ownership regardless management. People around a person there's a lot of voices you have coming after. Talk a little bit how you kind of sort through you -- information. But by the same token there's also people out there with their own -- how do you sort through. The different information that you get about media guide you questions while I think that's that's."

" Other there's an art to that you know I think you want to get all the information he can but should do have to understand. You know what each individual is bringing information what is that motive what is that. You know what is their agenda I think even it will we're evaluating players no different you know. Position coaches always want to protect their guys are gonna love their guys they're going to want the veteran guys are not going to want the young guys in all those things -- play. I think when you're talking about evaluating a coach. You know what if there's another coach this year. Conferring with his is that person after his job -- me you know they're different things you have to -- certain certainly all of it adds up and then in the end. I think we have to take all that information sort through it make good decision for what's best for the team. And as a head coach that's your responsibility."

" My perspective one of the reasons Peyton Manning is such incredible talent. And comes back beyond the physical skills beyond the experience that he had grown up and learn about the quarterback play. Every minute of life every sitting at dinner talking with his dad Brothers. He has such great intellectual approach for the game -- entire series associate football team. -- it's possible trips what they always wanted to do if he wanted to know the answer before the ball that. The first thing that jumps out of this is incredible recall he won't talk to you about a play that happened in the second quarter of five years ago against -- team and he was on the out route and the quarter baited into this through that. And jump on it and he'll remembered an absolute minds before."

" There. Regardless. Of the same style -- guys and minds. Those guys just wait won't football IQ. He's the guy no that's for the whole lot of Watson. He's in another coordinator from up there on the field no doubt you -- him. -- That's an office here you are. -- opposite he's amazing. I thought. -- Our stores our house. Congress is pops up that statement is without doubt. They're one of the greatest quarterback play."

" In -- session obviously you've had some great battles with Indianapolis Colts will talk will be about -- and but you referred to Tony Dungy -- remember you would be a part of that deep offense will we played. Twice a year Detroit Lions and Barry Sanders and you just couldn't play buried the same way. You guys came up with a brilliant box scheme where it was always the -- Barry Sanders boxed up. Maybe not get quite the pass -- you wanted but you you adapted your scheme. Yeah you do."

" You definitely do I think you know we're very. You had to keep him corralled me very it was a guy that if you if you -- off on an island of new one on one -- a lot of room your intro. So it was really kind of build a box built. Trying to build a wall around him not let him get out you knew that he had certain tendencies where he give two or three yards and back up and then take off outside. And and really had to folks harder at keeping that box type in squeeze in it and not -- in passable bottom you have to construct the boxes and we got some great days of stop and bury him in I think you know. Large part of it and do recognizing what he was relieved of that. And then look at the take them away. And then with Payton man and I don't know we've had. As many great days we've got a couple good days against them. I think the one thing that -- fortunate to do that. Very few quarterbacks do like him. Is he really forces you to show. Them the things that you want to try and do. And then gets into another player and or get out of a bad play as well as anybody at the line of scrimmage and I think one thing he does a remarkable job. With a double cadence the triple caves head Bob and and change in the play once he sees something get them that negative play and that's what he does very very well."

" You have to be careful when your calling that kind of defense. I'm no end times that we played them and of course with what -- view and Marvin and and and Rex Ryan. Rex in particular we get very frustrated you can do too much cancer in terms of what he does this all do that it will check and double checked him. Who's on first of what's on second ball that kind of stuff it you can -- and frustrate your defense can."

" Oh what a kid and I think you have to go and understanding what he's about and really as a defense. Going -- and understand he's going to make some plays and you can't get frustrated and I think that's -- state. I think when people trying to go after him and and get rattled. That when they fall apart and in and kinda lose their poise and that's what he really yeah so. I think you have to go in knowing he may get a player to here and there he's going to do a good job working at the line of scrimmage. But I I think for us we found that you know adjusting wrestle them. You've got two Olympic -- you have to hit him you can't let him -- get too comfortable. But you can't get carried away going after him hog while going crazy who is frustrated so. There's a fine line there there's kind of a happy medium and in terms of giving him enough to make him work. Got to get him off the spot make moves -- I think when he's able to set up and and just throw on time and rhythm what he can he likes yeah. Jack Kent amateur appreciate it look forward -- the over the next couple months -- I'll be a lot of fun Bryant talked."

" look up find out what Brian Billick is not a fan of the wildcat offense plus hear about becoming a head coach has affected John Paul long flight but home. Coach before Brian Billick continues after the NFL on fox he's back."

" Welcome back. Each week we're going to take -- football term one that's predominant the National Football League whether it's a specific strategy or tactic. And try to delve into it and try to better understand. In a minute we're going to talk with head coach of the Atlanta Falcons Mike Smith. They open up against the Miami Dolphins and actually we've got to talk about the wildcat offense and all that that in tail we call this segment. Billick 101. Here's our first installment."

" Let's talk about the -- count off. Something that you almost obligatory it's our obligatory -- hadn't run today because it's such as well. The whole premise of the wildcat offense is the running game quarterback is putting much -- In the game of numbers defensively you have eleven guys about the offense and offensively you're really you can't thankfully it is and -- to -- So what the wildcat the basic premise the wild if -- were going to remove the quarterback. Out on the maturity. -- me. He's not accurately. This allowed me to put whoever I think -- wildcats. Quarterback should be a variety of on the ground. Minnesota team for -- now wide receiver -- has decides to take the direct snap from. Quarterback Brent -- old single wing style of football. With a wide receiver or running back speed -- tight end H back. You know blocking there. And now I have and quarterback it -- it. Quarterback all of them do it takes that and handed off -- have a direct snap and fired wildcat quarterback. And I wanted number of single -- Delaware -- he. Styles of play I'll bring the wide receiver demotion well -- reversed. Did the reverse all right speed option play with the quarterback backside back wide receiver the possibilities of pitch. And I can really challenge the defense and challenge those eleven people over here the quarterback you know if you with the formation. You've got to put somebody on him but now I. And once again and would give me now a chance to be more successful offensively. The problem I have the wildcat offense is last year even though it was very blow it didn't work against -- And this year particularly where more people are going to spend time at all that does -- do -- they're going to take now free safety and strong safety. Sometimes -- many times both had to just going to bring them off off the line of scrimmage. They're going to pack this proverbial box not alienate him box possibly nine man box saying you don't have a viable enough rat. Quarterback position. Countdown on the field particularly only one receiver but don't think it puts your quarterback very much and I like this match -- fanatic he. We're itself back into numbers your priority in that I'm in every war is. Point -- attack that you -- there."

" Joined by Mike Smith head coach of the Atlanta Falcons -- got your opener against Miami and if we're talking Miami of course the vogue thing is -- the wildcat offense. You're a long time college coaches well you face the option you faced this type of thing. What just how unique how tough is it to get a pro defense to be ready for a defense this type."

" Well Brian it as you know the wildcat. Is the -- thing right now of course Miami had probably the most success of any team. Last year in the league and when your defense and that you really have to defend an actual player. You know normally -- you know in the NFL you don't account for the quarterback running the football. And in the wildcat offense. They have a guy back there that's receive in this that does not distributing the ball to sum up someone else is actually another ball -- so you can't. By formation if you don't get lined up correct you can be a man short and I think that's the big issues. That you face when your have been in the wildcat. Formations that -- offensive coordinator you you know you often -- guys. He would together in the off season trying to make life miserable for us guys on the defensive side what."

" Is it as MAB I'm overstating it but it unless they can really do it with a guy that can be a viable threat thrown the ball. Can't she uses an advantage or seeing a lot of teams where that play well against the you only not only had the eighth out of the box you good Burnett -- down the box just kind of create that picket fence that you talk about defense."

" Yes you can have Brian and of course. The defending the path. With most changes is is not something that you really have to concern yourself will. -- but they do a lot with with the formations they get into the unbalanced look than what they try to do -- try to again now in -- outflank you or that you out of it happens you know when your plan. An eight man front or nine man front and you don't gap and out just right. That shape he's got to make things right here that in the middle of the fielder pure plan and nine man front. You know if it hits it's gonna go for so long yardage and I really think if I've watched it we've watched it. They they have. A series of plays that they want to run they want to try to get your perimeter and if you overplay the perimeter. Then they really want to get the ball downhill and they'll actually. Ron what we consider a quarterback isolation and basically. That's what you know that's what they're doing now Miami they may have a situation in this first ball game we're going to have to defend a guy that can throw the football. In pat white we don't know how their plan on using him if they're going to try to advance. The wildcats from what they did last year in the pre season they showed. About eight or -- perhaps one of the ball -- but it was the exact formations and exactly. That it show last year I think the big thing is is how they're -- advance. It's very. Different than in the than in the college game that things that Miami. Did last year and most of things and experiment with that. It's just scratching the surface of what you can do one without -- that."

" You you have what I think is one really great young quarterbacks in the game Matt Ryan -- three games last year. To watch him progress from from game 34 fingers went head to Chicago game the latter part of the season and what a great talent he has. You know the coach -- will be with Matt Ryan for a long time that's always a special relationship yet you're not you know coordinating you're not. On the offensive side of the ball so talk about how you actively develop that relationship -- head coach. Quarterback relationship. That's a little different than if you were may be running the offense -- with him on a daily basis meetings on the field. But obviously you have to have that relation how do you nurtured that being the head coach."

" GR well -- I think it really started when we are doing our due diligence. For the draft that you know them the first time I had an opportunity to talk with -- I really wanted to get in his head and see where he was. In terms of it can be any competitor became real obvious to me in the in fifteen minutes into the conversation that this that likes the likes to compete. And we we went through the offseason and Alan and -- today there's an open competition for. The number one quarterback. Spot on our football team in in New York that he earned at real early and after we made the decision. Two named him the starter. I think our relationship relief changed I brought that up into the into my office and and we really mattered a real good. Interaction and had a I think you're very good talk I talk to -- about that you don't have. To be the franchise quarterback you're our quarterback you don't have to concern yourself with about. Being in all these expectations and having all these expectations. Just like me being in a first year head coach we've got to use the keep. People around us and -- And we really. Written really had a good conversation in terms of understanding. How we want and how we want to approach this and I think Matt has grown into a leader. And he's grown into a very very quickly. In terms of interacting with Matt. Manifest a football junkie. Even though I don't get to fit in and fit in on all the meetings in installed offense and that. He's such a football -- he's always asking questions from a defensive perspective so. It allows me interact with him. And give him some inside and Al. People are trying to. That defend -- you know what this in and dramatically what is it from deep interest standpoint that there cal on the defensive players they may be close in the middle of the field. In -- three deeper or rolling up and playing in playing cover two. But where are that age where are the real weakness is that the defense and maps always asking is that how they're going to play that or is it is this the others see it so. We get a chance that really talk football. Quite a bit I think once you build a relationship like that in the fell off the field and things like that can continue to grow as well."

" Mike I appreciate appreciate your joining us on the first show and that would report Hawkins future. Okay Brian. Good talking to you guys."

" Coming up but coach B Brian Billick opened up the mailbag that it's your email will be back after this. NFL on fox."

" Welcome back. This segment of the show was called how I see. Basically I'm going to talk about it topical issue that's going on within the league at any given time. For this first segment has to be obviously about the open the first game of the season. It's a fascinating dynamic that every coach has to deal on the one hand you coming into the season and everything all the passion or energy that you have to have. To win a National Football League and it's all geared towards that first game -- hurt player after player coach after coach. Talk about how from the pre season to the regular season it's hard for people to imagine the difference in intensity the difference in focus the difference -- passion between the pre season and the regular season particularly for young players. Like your rookie. The problem is you put all that emotion all the energy into the first game it's all about the opener you've known since late April who that -- was going to be again. Everything that you've installed everything you've done is pointed towards beating this team. But as we know come Monday morning or basically Tuesday after the Monday night game. Half the teams in the league will be 11. You now have to deal with the crisis and believe me it is a crisis. The organization is deflated the fans in the media -- on your tail because you've lost that all important home opener. And we will begin to hear the constant how many teams that started all 11 the no into an 013 in the league and what their record was the chances going on to win the Super Bowl. The entire season hinges on this single game. That it's an amazing more offices once we get to the end of the season in November and December were talking about the must win how big this game in remembering that back in September the games that are in September are equally important as the games November December. We just don't know what the repercussions where the outcome -- the results of the outcome. Of what those games are going to mean when we get into November December compared to September so the whole dynamic of the very first game and all the emotion you pour into it. Is a dilemma for every coach and every player because you have to have that confidence passion but by the same token. You can't be ready to slit your wrist if you start out of 11. -- this segment of the show we're going to answer some questions from the fans. This one -- from Brian in Arlington Virginia he writes Brian I was just wondering if the coach gets angry with the officials as we do as fans. You better believe that I've paid over 75000. Dollars in fines because of going after the officials at one time or another receiver believe. That we do get up that but I've got to tea this league is spectacular with regards to job does with the officials. It's a tough job it's the scrutiny the eye in the sky particularly now with the review system with the Jumbotron. But the ability of the players the fans on TV at the stadium to he was the guy in bounds out of bounds to the ball hit the ground. Did not hit the ball the level of scrutiny that these guys are under is unbelievable. Your relationship with officials is is a unique one it's professional. You try to be friendly but there's no helping during the course the game your emotions are going to get a better idea. But I've also long believe that your players and your fans need to you get after the official little bit. You know Major League Baseball. The manager could kick dirt on home plate well we can't do that so they've got to see you basically fighting for them fighting for them the fans. Fighting for the players in terms of interacting with the officials making sure that your gonna get that right call but to think that your going to influence them one way or the other. Every officially officiating crew comes into your office just for the game and askew for a list of things that your concern. Are concerned about and I got the point where I didn't want every thing up because she sure as I told them you know what this team really holds a lot are really want you to watch that will we get five holding calls at the end of the day that call on us and not them. So that's a little paranoid obviously. But they do do a good job and it's a tough job it's one that develops a great deal of scrutiny. And is gonna be written about him critique for all week long so I admire what they do you miss some time they really really do magnet."

" Coming up on coach before Brian Billick will be joined by Ravens head coach John Harbaugh I get a preview of Brett Favre Dave he would -- liked it. Coach before all thought after the it -- lunch box he's fast."

" Welcome back coach become excited about having Baltimore Ravens head coach. John Harbaugh with John thanks for joining us. John you've grown up. With your -- successful -- dad Jack successful college coach who brother Jim long time -- player now they had coached Stanford. You grew up -- at the dinner table talking football every -- your life. How did that develop you wore. Perception of what it was to become head."

" At first it was me it's very amenable to all of college kids are ground for everything we do. Our coach kids you know science officer training camp practice and players case -- you know it's great experience. Growing up as coach -- Yeah you know our coaches work and you work there -- an hour after hour -- off. -- Q has been part of that to me that. Part of it -- the -- understand it. Two so that's what you know goes into. The relationship that yes it -- football team I was struck me that but. Yeah that. That should the values internal factors that don't don't. Football team has problems it's what. Years."

" Did did you ever Jack when you've got this. Throw that big warm fuzzy -- and you -- points it looked whatever you do don't do this."

" Yeah. I don't know conversation but -- if you don't lose that knows coach welfare and yeah. -- And -- hurts their you know their -- centuries. Is part is that. Hat so -- in the -- there -- back informed this book -- game ones. So I think it's really important that failing -- Watson good this. Season."

" Now with all that advice you got what was the problem the biggest thing now a year removed from a that that caught off guard the most that thought boy this is I had no idea that this was going to be that way as a first time it -- right."

" Why can't you so there is anything that was like totally completely strike. -- I'd expect. But the thing -- most interest in me was the fact that your position every conversation so much impact. Every single person our weather's player. Whether it's on the don't. -- my guys that it just feels that we you know we got great here but whoever it is -- conversation just. You know job or Bryant or assistant coach taught that person your head coach. And yeah you'll be careful relationship going. Opportunities in Iraq people you know all those conversations so important thing and I count myself. Get more carefully and you know -- coach."

" You know -- not a a few years from going to draft we actually had to move up the spot to did you with the Baltimore Ravens. And I can't remember a time -- room was more related. Or erupted more than sheer joy is when we we drafted loaded I like to have my my team. -- beat these he's an athletic guy that could stay on me he can push the pocket in the path for a he's got that. The ability to to drop and I know Rex did a great job with some of the things that this -- 315 pound drop and -- and it. -- about it that was you know got a couple of interceptions. He's a big strong guy maybe not a little bit coming out. People question whether or not he he played every down I think that happens on -- Beilein -- I think as a misunderstanding. Young man you know. Somewhat of -- tragic circumstance where he lost his mother and father and because of that was pressed -- basically being the patriarch with the Fam so. For young young man to come in and showed the emotional maturity. The whole loading nodded it was the thing that jumped out of me the most lot of upside. I think he's a great player and looks like he has room to grow it even better so. Or so we don't have them on our schedule won't get them until late. In the playoffs -- were both so fortunate things without a doubt I think right now maybe the most dominant big man. Let's finish up with with got to be wondered."

" Favorite topics when your favorite people talk about. Draft from when I was there as a head coaching him right away you knew there was something special about this guy -- will not. Just give give me your observations about how he's matured as a player kind of impact player he's become."

" Right hook. Drafted -- you're -- start up -- You know there's there's. Talk about that desperate passes so. Just. -- he's he's physically dominant force. He's kind -- He's already proven. He was -- Pass rush or try to pitch here. He's just physically so gifted. So anyways athletic so -- for his victory partners were active the last three years. -- is Bob Edwards becomes a much more powerful. So much physically fit and he was McCain or. This is focused platform yeah that's fine defensive tackle. People. --"

" Each week come and talk a little bit about the game I have with Thom Brennaman broadcast partner -- this week we've got a great one -- the Minnesota Vikings at the Cleveland Browns. Obviously everybody is excited to see how Brett Favre is an impact very good football team by way of the Minnesota Vikings and how they're going to -- his talents along with the great running skills of Adrian Peterson and the great rush defects that they had in Minnesota. They're playing a Cleveland Browns team that has a lot of question this is the fourth go round in eleven years. That the Browns have had a new coach and now we do general manager by way of Eric Mangini and Eric Kostis. A lot is being after the browns' fans as I said earlier this is the fourth time in eleven years they've been asked to accept that new coach new approach. Air BMG is a veteran coach in the NFL having spent three years with New York Jets. Has commented pretty much cleared the roster as of today they have 22 new players on their 53 man roster. And when we recorded this had not yet been their starter quarterback. A lot of debate whether that's a good thing or bad thing. Clearly there's a lot of questions they were here last or last in virtually every relevant offensive and defensive statistic last year in the National Football League. And they're going to have to all but at home. Faced this top rushing defense the Minnesota Vikings and the talents of Adrian Peterson Brett Favre and up and coming the citation -- tied in. And Sidney Rice at wide receiver to go with Bernard Berrian. So this going to be -- tall task for the Cleveland Browns but the Cleveland Browns have great fans it's a great venue it's a great place to open season for opening weekend of the National Football League on fox. Well that'll do it -- the addition of coach speak. -- want to thank the coaches to join me this week in Mike Smith. Jack Del Rio and John Harbaugh will talk to them next week along with Mike McCarthy and Mike Singletary. You can catches each week at 1 PM eastern standard time on foxsports.com. Will look forward to seeing you next week."
