" That we got coach speak what Brian Billick present -- stands up. Mike McCarthy would discuss the transition of of of -- three to a 34. Mike Schmidt will tell us out Tony Gonzales makes Matt Bryant even better. At Jack no real breakdown of the Jets -- to slow down the dangerous Larry FitzGerald. That it bought coach -- what Brian Billick presented by stands up."

" Hi Brian Billick welcomed coach speak presented by San each week -- there with a different group of coaches and talk all things NFL both on and off the field. -- got a great group of coaches to visit with Jack Del Rio from the Jacksonville Jaguars John Harbaugh from the Baltimore Ravens and the three mikes Mike Singletary Sampson school 49ers. Mike McCarthy in green bay Packers and Mike Smith from the Atlanta Falcons. While we're gonna take a specific topic each week in those with the coaches a little more in depth about their perspective this week it's gonna be about play calling. -- some of these coaches that are the primary play caller. Other coaches that are calling often to the defense and we'll find out how to interact with the coaches that do you do that. It's going to be a fun time some you're gonna enjoy every week joining us each week here on coach speak but tonight will start and -- and Jack Del -- the Jacksonville Jaguars Jack thanks for European with this. Let's talk a little bit about Jack."

" You've you've been. -- coordinator you know head coach. You -- and call the game. Being in defense -- coordinator. Let's talk about both during the course of the week and game day how would you choose to interact and and put your imprint. On all phases of the game offense defense special teams. With your coordinators talk a little bit about -- tell me about how your week goes with regards to the way you look at now. And how you communicate with future corners right -- that's sort of that's a good question. Is the biggest. The place -- defense you know because that's wrong most heavily invested that's where I basically cut my teeth in the league. It and you know we'll set out to. Trying to look at what they're doing offensively. What we have up personnel wise what we can do package lies within. Within what we've done in camp -- within what we have -- system and I sort of what we used to talk about room and I work with you in Baltimore where. You know you have this large playbook of things that you do during camp that you prepare for the season for the when you get to the regular season. You're gonna pool different things from different areas that you worked on in the playbook which can have a whole playbook up every week so we'll we'll sit down and do that defensively. Trying to dial another different personnel packages and formations -- got to deal account for and then things they like to do out of my -- and take that away. And that I that I move in the special teams I wanna get it was -- earlier in the week and let him know my thoughts on. What I see them doing well give his input talk about personnel possible personnel changes. You know special teams wise sometimes those guys can be left short. What with what decision you might make with keeping an office in defense of guy yeah particularly in need. Sort try to give him that early in the week in this and that's on offense and my look. For offered -- cutter in the office staff and from what I seen in them doing. Sometimes they'll have a blitz they'll call for different things and also know that's the same blitz. You just have afforded the formations. What's coming off -- use your feelings for different things but it's really the same thing they're gonna do. That's adjusting based on your formations so. Trying to get better information to him earlier in the week and when we get to game -- Bryan and I like the guys that call the game I want them to call their game and and I will give them inputs and I wanna run and here network. You know take a shot here whatever it is like that but but basically try to leave it up to them you brought -- up that might be instinct for I think for fans to hear is. One of the hardest things you have to do is when you pare it down that 45 man roster. The debates between the offensive guys -- we gotta we gotta have that extra tight and a wide receiver. And the defense of guys are gone what we need extra quarter. But -- special teams coach is going to -- you know what I know that third string corners are great quarter but he's a terrible special teams guy. I need that extra talk a little bit about those discussions and how obviously those of the tough course you have to."

" Yeah those are you know what we try to do very similar Bryant again some of the structure that you provided that we we carry over today. We try to give the special teams coach. Look on Tuesday afternoon of what we expect the week to go light. And we'll come back together on Friday morning and say. Okay this is what we really anticipate for Sunday and then even yet on Sunday every now and then you'll go to this special teams coach ago. I know you thought you were getting Billy Bob who's a really good -- but the only weekend helps that corner we're gonna need this other corners -- so. That's exactly what happens offensively and defensively. Of the guy that you may one up for the game may not be the best special teams guy in the end in his right that's a delicate balances right now as a head coach. Trying to decide what's gonna help your football team be best of them during the weekend because your defense of background. Do you find you can go into the offensive guys occasionally you know what -- this this could be good against them this would stretched them with the they're gonna have a tough time dealing with absolutely absolutely. You know. You go and again you say look we've got a core here they're really hang in on this one this guy's. You leave him on an island he's knock them they'll hold up you really need to go after him he -- single coverage go over there. Or they're trying to play this was safety look they're not reveal to take this away from him. Maybe the way they played everybody plays or coverages it's a little bit different maybe the way they play their cover for their cover two it -- linebackers cheat on this. You can really take advantage of them there. So the other little things that way that. I -- trying to tip off the office that might be might be good or vice Versa let the defense knows. Office will be back to be problematic."

" Bursting you do would you -- he's got. This you'll set your everybody's. -- the way he. -- Curome and almost you know he's covered he's not so. -- you're you're definitely a particular it's curable when -- you hear about how difficult it is. To deal with a player that has that kind of size that Kyle leaping ability you can roll Norman still going to be able to make -- place one is when you got the safety over the top once you get downfield and it won't ball. And one in the world and very few players who we. And dictate the tone of the game. Can be that kind of player very FitzGerald hasn't seen -- global I think we've seen for years now he's the guy. Knows how to body weight for you know body it was from the defense that he really gave us a lot of problems. And the ball is everything to a four players for worked with curveball. Fastball. -- How much to. My mind players. What. -- quite a task."

" This week with with Larry FitzGerald you know we've been I've been talking with all the coaches about. You know the old adage that you could hold the speed you can bracket. Quickness what do you do with the big fast guy that can leap like Larry FitzGerald and he's never really covered. Talk about the challenge of -- taken on the big dynamic receiver like that well first of all elusive as -- I think. He is one of the class guys in the league."

" You know it and now you know kind of from our time and I -- doubt you know run around with with Larry is dad be in there is as a newsman. So yeah -- unbelievable. It was in Minnesota right as the Minnesota. Yeah it was a bad workforce -- there he was up there and audio sound bad but. He was that was the best the most gifted bad -- in the history of the national football on unbelievable but I. I'm really proud of what of what he's been able to do but I I don't look for to have in the face in this week. Because like you and he can he can run by -- Even when he's covered he can catch it he's a big guy you don't have a god you know big enough to tackle him he'll run you over. He's a real weapon in his class kids so. We're gonna have to make sure that we do our best stuff fortunately we have pretty good size quarters. At least our front line guys so. You know -- Cox rookie in Rashean Mathis we've got good size speed guys we should be able to contest some of those jump ball situations where. Yeah you have great coverage its own up to him anyway so. We've got to work cut out we're gonna we're gonna get you started on that way when I get off -- you will start that that the process of preparing for the Cardinals this week but. We all know that he's a heck of itself."

" Still a -- John Harbaugh discusses the difficulty of traveling to the west coast that more when we come back."

" The NFL on. That's square off."

" Quarterback coach speak presented by -- In a minute we're gonna be joined by Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy but right now we're gonna go to our segment that we call -- wanna one. What -- gonna do each week has taken concept of the term. Something with regards the technical aspect of this game really try to delve into it if we can help identify. For -- defense they were gonna talk about the 34 defense versus the 43 defense other similar and other different."

" Great deal with today being NATO or 334 defense worth reading and you'll terminology the three -- four with defense. Fourth Korea's -- even defense. And at first off I'll leave it today's football I think much is made -- even the most part 340. Teams like San -- and we've now. Cleveland would there Mangini. They've reduced or move. Around enough that there aren't more for me victory you know they called felt report defense is pure 314. In that -- probably less than 30% of the time by the time you your third down nickel alike. It's really I think people make much let's talk about it -- base 314. And it was called -- to yet by. Mine line that. As we have All-Star. Linebacker outside that's right before defense. Is that now offensively this stretch few. You don't know which of these four line back one work or is going to so what extent your protection package and trying to figure out. Today the match here off -- statement on behalf. I'm gonna -- as Pittsburgh. Someone like -- or -- Very effective coming from the outside as a -- and linebacker. James Harrison obviously the president and VP of the league. They'll take a snapshot of money back. Outside linebacker like one of those. Any day of the week so offensively you have to turn your protection act. Art out some people who do -- read the guard point 12. Anything they do to minimize that match up -- running back it'll fall back. Outside line back at the difference between that and a 34 defense and even though. -- 34 defense many times. We'll do what's called refutes that the defensive tackle now. Building went out to perform in front and these guys -- the ones and the demands. They really are. You look what we want right now even though they have latitude rob covered. Let's look at what your. -- Typically you're gonna -- inside tackle. You're gonna have your defense of hands on outside. As an accident or read your portrait middle linebacker. And quicker outside linebackers. Outside you don't still -- but you know felt every freshman outside. Most teams that are base four man front partnered with hopes acting like back. And behind the defense on the strength of this defense even help offensively you like it because I know -- most or which four guys -- I think that easily you now what -- live back there or protect you injured tackle. Your adds to the point where you make it very difficult combination block by David -- apple with the center in the car to work up. Before the bubble. Or to get that that line back that second level line back. Linebacker like Ray Lewis loves the you know looking rough because it gives them an opportunity please don't let -- keep in mind gobble up those are your line. Can't get him out. Home side to side at the end of today about now like a lot of these are the best position pump myself or there. The 431. Front got a lot of linebackers. Very good at that position don't have as me good insight into your mind the front of -- as as maybe some other team. I'm going to be myself third --"

" Mike thanks for joining us are really appreciate your your -- in in and a great win last night against a Chicago I know how big that is to open the season in the division. What talking about why things were just looking out the show was. Have they talked about the 34 or the fourth three of the merits of being in one or the other and you've kind of -- conversion with dom capers and and some of the things that you don't want talk a little bit about. The thought process you've gone through in terms of an in your observations as an offensive guy. As attacking the two different fronts."

" Well number one of them to make it changes it's really too it's a two part. Answer to your -- questionable ones personnel. Of this always felt the linebacker body type. It is better bought a type that you can do allows all your special things. I compared to the body type on the offense with the with the tight ends and fullbacks it is that the -- and pull back. And linebacker position just usual excellent for us flexibility have you can haven't. I'm not the most level -- types of from a personal standpoint that that was that was the biggest -- blitzes. Dramatically -- you know. I. 43 report doesn't really matter to me it's it's really a story pointed it depends on what scheme you wanna go with. In its report report three I think if report -- to a more flexibility to discuss -- before torturers. From your base alignment so that all of us here as -- goes off as a coach. He entered there's a little more for guessing game more prepared to get the doing your protections and -- that identification and so forth -- dramatically. No I definitely wanted to 34. Because of those of the flexibility. Does that do snowstorm with a 34 the you don't confront them we refer to -- fans' approval fourth -- a big part of my decision was personal."

" You're who didn't who didn't miss my 'cause I know -- without -- probable back for start cause the lose 52 with the Hokies had. It really -- comes down to and nobody discussed the pros and cons but. It for my money I understood your perspective. Are they make -- much ado about nothing even the purest of 314. The way they would do strong and we -- that the probably in a pure 34. Probably what 20% of the time."

" I don't know golf writers -- no absolutes in this business. You can't just do one thing is it's okay it's okay if you if you're 34 principal defense you're gonna have 43 characteristics. Because you do have to change. I think the coaching in this league and most of my time given the leagues in 1993 has improved so much people will stretch the field. The conservative miss of this -- of this game has changed of people play your wide open on defense and offense so you definitely have to having your plan."

" Don't you -- follow them -- want to expand just little bit about as an offensive coach. Going against the 34 were both the cards you're. Sensibly and cover. How you have to now you touched on briefly but expand a little bit about. You're pet you have to get a bit which of these linebackers are gonna come and so how that affects your protections where you're gonna turn it. Do -- the guard put -- back on a backer talk a little bit about how that stretches you will be."

" Oh really winner and a former airline it's pretty clear brutal fourth rusher is going to play -- 34 or not you gonna make a decision. We're gonna take the guard and tackle on fan. And blocked the pass rusher in the end off the -- were or do I like that matchup as the inside linebacker they were mostly base so. At some point you have to decide how you're gonna handle that base front. Because every protection has a stress point. And that that's that's when it comes about the -- base Bryant is is create a personnel mismatch potentially in all your base protections and that's not. Always true when you played 43 defense."

" I thought one of the best free agency pickup in the offseason when you got dom capers just think the world -- and -- know he's gonna do a phenomenal job for you. Talk about how you inner pact with dom during the course of the week. In terms of as the head coach and obviously your your focus -- great deal on the offensive side and that your call -- there. But how -- issue we'd go with -- in terms of input or hearing what the plan is with dom or any input you might give him about how to approach this team."

" Albeit an offensive player caller you know wants to punitive who's in the majority of my time is on offense. When dom came here in the spring I spent as much possible. As much top possible with chemists that says as the did the entry level installations to our defense and the coaches that have a clear understanding more to learn the language of what it was -- when he was putting putting into. With our players so. But a normal week is going to go after the game Sunday but actually were both there after the game. Goal going to film goes river was sort this morning. You know about what's the don't want the special teams coach at five at 5 AM the -- In his coach historic about that I am like watch the film with the offers from that -- and I'll watch it with the ball -- made the time. And that we have our staff -- go forth put. Where do we do break up with the players like go with the offensive although he is in total control of the old. We -- restored the course of the week -- wanna wanna big enough 10101. To -- have a set meeting. Every week for him out of discussed game plans that. You know I know has has brought with him on Monday night or Sunday Tuesday morning because I had all about the move wanna do my particular game players."

" I'm Mike is time to dip into -- back presented by Samsung today we got a question from Teresa Milwaukee she asks. How -- your play calling expanded offensively. With the growth and maturation of Aaron Rodgers."

" Well you did you get comfortable with with me he feels most comfortable with that is very important for the play caller. The that the quarterback others is always gone wrong like we're practically in my younger days as a play caller. Where you are so set on a certain scale were sort of plays because you've had success with -- in your pat Weathers and his and so on but. Learned the hard way it doesn't -- the quarterback. It's a little work solely about that -- great ideas that never made the call street. Because it did distant -- the quarterbacks -- now being what there going on for years we have several good understanding. Of both. What he likes an offensive and would like this off."

" Thanks Mike we appreciate you joining us if you have a question for -- one of the coaches we have one coach -- can tweak you can email -- question at coach speak. At fox dot com that's coach speak at fox dot com. -- will continue -- coach speak percent of us have some questions I ask you something. Great win for you over the weekend but as you know better anybody being one degree former special teams coach equally. Nothing is -- more. Nothing panics achieve more. Nothing to sideline before flying more than a blocked punt big play another turnover. Talk a little bit about how having recognized that. The process you go through in terms because of your parent the players prepare harder because you're gonna punt again at some point. Talk about how you deal with that with the coached players across."

" What you're -- orders and then the preparation. To understand going to be those situations and we don't. No matter what happens you can't crash can't expect no -- We understand that certainly to root for players huge when you -- We can we can climb back that. The -- you point out is the most devastating challenge often. That hasn't happened very often you know and it's surprising shocks your system but. Our special teams guys personal knowledge coach Ross hurt and kept their poise and played well the rest of the way. And our team I thought the great thing about this game was dominated teams winning ways in it to replace kept that the attack was -- left games tied. And a chance to win that game. Can answer about what the numbers. Or overwhelming. These issues -- well very well if you get a punt blocked. How often used again. You can draw strength from that -- guys look even -- that we were good enough. That we overcame that could very well that's the points no matter what happens can't can't can't -- Nor can control our emotions for us it's for us to control our emotions -- we have we have. Most powerful things. We used -- for the Orioles to control options are as. Big challenge on San Diego for a lot of different -- football right."

" Let's talk a minute about. East to west west -- travel all first thought is that overblown or is legitimate and secondly. What do you do take into account this is just jump from playing -- this is how the how have you how you handle it different from meeting times I mean how do you."

" Write what you know there's other ways of doing originally experienced a lot -- different things are Brothers Stanford he's gonna visit doctor after -- olympians. That this -- east is that it had changed perform so. -- a little bit about -- apparently west and east is different than east to west you know we -- play at 4 o'clock o'clock. So let's keep our clocks and we are gonna go to they had time. And try to get settled in over Saturday like -- you -- gestures and -- Philadelphia. But according to doctors Stanford where we're doing pretty prudently do."

" Well I was -- three years -- same doctor players now ops year. -- follow that because I've tried I don't know it's 4 o'clock or it's 4 o'clock their time it's our time but it's 1 o'clock west coast time so we're gonna go to bed at night. That's really eleven and I got to point respond coach what -- I -- I mean you could have some fun with the future you have to keep the players on our try to keep my regiment that that. Keeps them similar sort of answering those came with time yeah. I can take crap from pat. Talk a little bit about. Defense is -- these two options -- has got to be throws away. Joe Flacco. Stepped up."

" And and really kind of threw it on the shoulders of the circumstances of your game. -- and was able lose you know and there was no question is going to be it would do that and you don't have to to the west coach replacing Diego. Two pretty good defense is date you got a great quarterback he got over. Thompson Antonio that's a lot of weapons out. I mean defense of how do you approach that -- broad based. Tap right emotionally team it's only team all three days. -- defensively and special teams captain around repair and -- up front Roger Johnson he's also -- you know attendance was that's fixable let's. Offensively we have an idea what to do Kansas it was a little tough. We had a huge game plan because you know what you are and you kind of policy -- we'll find a little more. Think we can pinpoint and they -- they know what they do to regress to what to do -- so those things happen. We are play makers it's their pleasures always comes down."

" Much more on the way including Mike Singletary on his involvement with the 49ers offense that what -- coach before Brian Billick return."

" The NFL on. That's square off."

" We'll let coach speak presented by -- In a minute we're gonna have an opportunity to talk to one of the great linebackers of all time. Mike Singletary head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. But we ask the other coaches we worked with this week who they think was the best linebacker they ever saw play."

" I'd probably. --"

" There was two guys when I was really one week was hit but if I thought that that you know he was the the Venus one back for the play and then there was another guy. -- that played for the Baltimore Colts number number 32 little undersized guys that. I can remember that the one game with a guy came out on the field the -- on the field mountain my bird loved the guy that. Having been --"

" Just doesn't feel right to send -- Ray Lewis to go to the salukis towards. No Ray Lewis is the complete package and the thing I've appreciated -- Was that what you see on game day that passion focus and dedication. What releases about at least. I got to the high school -- start playing middle linebacker that it became Jack Lambert. You know I had. Sports Illustrated they had that they had a picture of him. I think he was doing some from some curls are soft you've got to -- up in this sort of what -- was to -- and smiled and you know what I had that both of them. In my room -- I wanted to be like him I'd be hit -- girls night. I'm going to be like -- so. Just the look of Jack Lambert. Would would scare the heck out of me big step on the football field. All -- Pittsburgh it was exactly ever and had a rough but a guy that I forgot to work with that I you have to mention Mike Singletary you look into his eyes I don't care whether it's football field and make room. We're just socially sitting. Can you just feel that intensity Bronx right food. And and -- for labels like all the great ones you wanna step off you wanna be good for him. You wanna be there for him because you know especially -- guys. -- do you."

" You bring unbelievable credentials to the coaching profession being a former Hall of Fame player. Tub a little bit about you know having worked with you and that intensity that you bring to the game your sense of preparation. Tell me a little bit about that transformation from player to coach what what has surprised you. What has spent some of the biggest things that are you look at that being a former players helped you become head coach. "

" I think. First and foremost as the form clear. Just really. Having great coaches to begin. That. Inspired Meehan and let me and women into words that. It made me want to coach at some point in time. Home. Soul. I think it started with Buddy Ryan. Being able to spend so much time with him in. And him allow me to watch film with him and trying to learn some of the the nuances in terms of what to look for why do you even look at film what should stick out. Home so that. As a player I really could appreciate what coaches did. I just felt that. As I begin to go forward. Being able to be with you in Baltimore. He really allow me to see. A whole different. Set of parameters around what coaching was all about. Being fortunate enough to talk to people like Bill Walsh and column Dan Reeves and Bill Parcells. Home -- it was it was great. Because I do it's just took notes dislike you told -- might just take notes and and wanted to -- when you're sitting in a chair. All of those -- will become a reality and and though makes sense Tia and to have."

" Do you find that you could do you find that you could still. Kind of look at what's going on and remember the player you say okay yeah I remember this and and maybe help the players with little in sight even from those playing that's."

" Absolutely I think great example was yesterday any game in and column Arizona. They had -- defense on. Our on our heels. In your marching down -- a little bit Poland and like deep into an indoor pretty good job mall today. Contain the ire of the law that. But when I looked on appeal the body language. The body language that I would see -- I need some help. On you know. I don't know -- I don't you know I don't know I can make it I don't I no longer do that extra now. That wasn't the group of guys that I had out there they want to win they they wanted to do. Everything they could in order to stop -- from -- and an Angel. But they need some help and so I called time now. Home you probably would jokingly. Call minute timeout. And locals know whatever. Hole but. Is what they needed like all the time out and walked out there and it Campbell we're looking at me with -- on the ground. -- Yet coach and well what. And I are basically guys in my year. I know you're tired. You're about to die. And I can hear you breathing over there but I want you'd understand I didn't know to be. A masking something. This game right here. I need three point -- at that you can do that I'd appreciate. -- And it did respond."

" Well let's see two weeks from now I really appreciate you taking time with me man. Well I thank you very much coach. Now we're gonna come into my segment called how I hit -- is gonna be my rant on something that's going on with Indiana fell on -- off the field. But I don't just kind of -- here and have some fun with. I didn't Minnesota Vikings versus Cleveland Browns game and there was a big play in the game when Braylon Edwards caught the ball down the field. Got forced out of bounds with a pass interference call came back inbounds made a great catch. That should have been a touchdown and it was challenged now. I'll dwell on record for not liking instant replay in its current form I like we play I just don't like it being done on the field. But this is a perfect example how replay. Impacted a very important play in a very important part of the game had we not had the replay. Braylon edwards' touchdown would have stood. Because we would not have seen that he was. Stepped out of bounds and had not reestablished himself inbounds. To get control of the ball and score the touchdown. Subsequently get the ball about the six yard line they don't get into the end zone they have to kick a field what field goal and it's a good point swing from the Cleveland Browns. Back to the Minnesota Vikings so as much as I wanna get on instant replay this was a perfect example of how they got it right and with out it. It might not have been corrected the proper way. I'm Brian Billick that's how I see. We're a start to segment with Mike Smith and RC it's star presented by Samsung. Might. Matt -- here or -- from Vietnam. Sophomore quarterback started out blew off. But obviously I really came through particularly in the second half when needed."

" You have Brian I thought that our offense up. Was fairly efficient. Early on but I -- more efficient the second in the second half up. Yeah we started out twelve play drive and drove the ball down the field and it. In the drive stalled out and we and we missed a field goal you know how that can kind of take to win that -- a little bit but. They were really load the box trying to stop the run I thought they did a good job and then -- really got you know got Roland started throwing the ball around."

" You expect to either -- bit more meaning as well as Matt Ryan's plan. The respect from Michael Turner I'm I'm interested and amazed that they continue to build that heavy box. Particularly when you've got Roddy White on the outside the presence of Tony Gonzales. As a home of the dimension to what were you surprised how heavily they committed to the run."

" Yes I was. In and we were we thought that that they would give us the good mix. I think maybe that they felt like. Who they wanted to stop the run and try to get the ball back into their hands on the offensive side of the ball while. And and when people do that we Matt's gonna have to you know distribute the ball out for the wide receivers in the tight ends and that. We missed a couple of opportunities Bryan now with some shots down the field. But. He really started -- has really big third down conversions to Roddy White one Michael Jenkins one and then of course on third down against -- all out blitz. We made it really -- and that -- scored that that touchdown from about twenty yards out."

" Yeah that he's been huge difference maker for -- know. Does a guy like Mike. Michael Turner gets frustrated. When he can't you really didn't cranked up the way he's used to it to run the ball and quite come off those big plays how to handle it out."

" And Michael very even even keel about -- probably fewer games last year where he didn't really get rolling you know -- for 1799. Yard. And that really regained the lead that that he didn't get Rolen and out. You know Michael as long as they were winning and things are good Mike Michael between player and he knows that people are gonna try to approach. Differently each week -- this week it was to try to stop the run maybe next week here and a you know try to stop retired general and -- and if that happens and we should be able to it might go."

" Thanks for joining us Mike we appreciate it we'll talk to so. You know each week so we're gonna have a chance to talk about the game that I get to for fox. This week it happens to be in Seattle Seahawks at the San Francisco 49ers -- this season with a big win. Now stay in divisional play and see who's going to be atop the NFC west. The should be a strength on strength match Mike Singletary San Francisco 49ers play very good defense last year.
