" For instance it's."
" This week -- coach speak with Brian Billick presented by Samsung Lions take that Jim Schwartz thoughts about Detroit. Big win over the Redskins. Mike Singletary will break down Brett Favre magical fourth quarter heroics. Had Jack del real thought about a little that is becoming all big Dodd's bill. All that have -- coach speak with Brian Billick presented by Sam so."
" I'm Brian Billick was this week's edition of coach speak. This week in the NFL is highlighted by a lot of big plays wouldn't talk to coaches like John Harbaugh. Of the Baltimore Ravens Mike Singletary the San Francisco 49ers. Mike McCarthy from the Green Bay Packers Mike Smith of the Atlanta Falcons and Jack Del Rio of the Jacksonville Jaguars. But there was no bigger play or should signal bigger game fourteen. That Detroit's win over the Washington Redskins and were initially joined by their first year head coach. Jim Schwartz and Jeff this briefly talk about we talk about the changes the -- a little changes that you said obviously. Now you chain locker room round of the parking space is in and of itself but you just had to change. Everything about the way they do business and then the wind has got to validate that no way that you you gotta feel like throw from right."
" Yeah out in ominous likes to win a game we need to get to a point or not celebrate not a week three win the same way that you know we celebrate -- post season win or when he gets -- post season. But it's been part of the same message and I got the job and the players came back on March 16. If that it's not business as usual. I think that players take comfort in the fact that knowing that. You know they're coming back with you know everything. And regardless of what happened last year different this year."
" I came away impressed very impressed you with not only Matthew Stafford but you're willingness human Scott Linehan. Willingness to put him in position that last series. Where on a second ten where a lot of conventional thinking might have been look. Let let's just run the ball run the ball don't stop the clock your opponent and make them go the length of the field. But the willingness to let Matthew Stafford give that little bootleg go out of left and make to get that big first down. To me that speaks body about the confidence you have and is growing your quarterback."
" I actually had a conversation with him in the team hotel on Saturday night and it was just may have him on the in the elevator. And I said hey you know. One of the reasons you have this job is because your aggressive. Just know this -- head coaches behind you. And I'll knock on micro manager or or criticize every every. You know mistake when should be aggressive -- gone I don't want to turn into conservative quarterback. In that regard and if we called for a minute drill at the end of the game -- out of form the offense is trying to. Number one get first downs number two gain yardage keep the clock going. And you -- and facilitate field position again and again. We ran the boom really to try to get about five yards for a look at for Pettigrew in the flat. And five yards -- second Valentine's gift five yards keep the clock rowand has earned them four have a chance maybe to run the ball. What happened was that tight end on the deep Evan brown came wide open. And you know map wasn't. You know he wasn't content just to take that little five yard play which. You know may have forced us into a third down may have wanted the ball earlier give Redskins more time at the end."
" Did you have a sense of locker room no you have what 31. New players on that 53 man roster who -- part of obviously the previous year but -- certainly have enough players. Could use and what that meant to them in the fans and I mean did you get a sense of that and -- locker room."
" Yeah you know it wasn't just that the 31 new guys everybody was bearing. You know the burden so to speak oh in nineteen. You know wasn't enough force to be -- is bad enough. But when you're carrying the flag from 19 team and things that happened before you were there. That's one thing but you know a lot of those guys had been part of that and they hadn't had -- and December 23 2000. So it was a monkey off our back it was a monkey off their back it allowed them to move on there was a lot of emotion involved I don't wanna journalist -- realized the win. Because -- went in the National Football League but it was a report it was important for your organization it was important for fans it was important for the city."
" And got to move on the next one and I know about to well Jim I appreciated just one number real simple -- quick one and a had to address with you though because I really enjoyed being there. Yes they're watching all that and we'll get together next week can talk a little bit more -- is no. Look forward to. Jim Schwartz obviously has won the good up and coming young quarterback in the league but we saw Brett Favre to a typical magic this last weekend let's talk to some of the coaches about this great future Hall of Fame player."
" You can have a match don't cover and all the other things again you know -- I think there is going to be completely Brett probably the most difficult quarterback. For -- no way. That that I would think that -- deal to make the plays he made Sunday at this point in his career and I just. The scramble around by time. A step up be close to line of scrimmage chucked the ball forty yards. At least forty yards or -- And put it exactly where I'm I don't know if you could go and actually laced that ball in the batter's box."
" He's won more games. At the quarterback position there's in the national football I don't think it's pretty -- The ball the way he plays today when."
" Time he was no doubt put the ball behind his back to running back he scampered for thirty yards and another guy he's going back to -- like they're individuals and that is a very crossing route. He just measles kind of."
" By Mike we we talked to a number of the coaches about just how special player Brett Favre is an in virtually all of them. Have some game or recollection of Brett Favre doing. Just what you had done to lift group on Sunday let let's talk about first off let's talk about as as your perspective having seen Brett Favre years that you have. Obviously huge amount of respect for him how how he's able do just what makes him so special now let's talk a little bit about. What happened on the play and really is there anything you could have done differently."
" in in. You know retrospect when you look back to play like dad used to million that you could have done differently. Within something else happens. I I do think kids it's one of those into when you look at a player like Brett Favre -- the experience. That he has I think he's forgotten more than a lot of guys play in the game. No time and I think. You get him in a situation like that there are some quarterback most quarterbacks I think. Really. Maybe in their minds. Feel that man -- I don't know -- is gonna happen and you know the mindset. You know did -- too many things happening but I think for a guy like Brett Favre. And maybe a few other athletes and in the world. Of that mindset. You're thinking this is exactly what I want. Someway somehow all on them and make -- play."
" Do you I've also talked to some of the coaches. And you were around and saw and played against a Barry Sanders. And that special quality he had hit it it wore out -- defense during the course of the day can you just knew he was gonna bust out. Is far that way a little bit does he wear you out emotionally defensively because you're just waiting for that played happened that he can he can make so often."
" You know I don't know few words out I I think the biggest stage in use around. When you play against a guy like Brett Favre you just don't want to come down to the last. I mean -- the most important thing. You you want. It's best you can. Make sure that the game is used doesn't have to be on the line for someone like him and if you have the opportunity to run the clock out. You don't do everything you can't do that if we could you wanna keep they."
" I'm Michael thank you so much good look on the weekend man. I think you very much coach. "
" Still to come Brian Billick breaks down his favorite -- leg that was -- John Harbaugh spots on big plays on specialty."
" That immoral what coach before Brian Billick presented by -- return."
" Welcome back coach speak presented by -- we've got a red hot coach a Baltimore Ravens John Harbaugh. John your team is nobody playing better in the Ravens right now it's going to be fun. Well our guys they're playing hard and every week present a challenge -- one. For a little quarter practice Wednesday's scores -- You know we talk couple weeks ago about how 11 of -- not the most dramatic play of football is blocked kick. And beer and one of the best special teams coaches all the time that you were doing that Turkey through progression what you look for. When you come waves going -- we can we get a block on this."
" Right well you know just what -- talked about coaches in the elements. Protection you study him in Tokyo with the snap. And -- get a so it's probably start this you know they're a little bit slow it is senator visual longest active. These guys and and it is that -- take our advantage. If our pace a little longer to get it off. He's long it was what works or gets close to the line of scrimmage although -- things that you look for because you can try to -- blocks spot -- his -- that you can get to. You know enough time to get there nice start searching out the protection programs in the protection. And you look at personality architect -- look at scheme. Could be so we just the -- you -- to -- some particular trial. Some particulars actually particular movement that you can kind of protect. And then some kind of rough or pitching decently clean. It was getting it somebody's mean because exactly. -- pass rush were you get kicked -- involved -- injured quarterback is an old ball. But ultimately got two seconds or less. You guys get their clean so. You have no -- technique you know a senator doesn't get into me get quite as well as issue one way or the other or. Garbage doesn't case there quite as deep. As you like -- in case that maybe he get an edge for me terms too much outside and you reject the ball -- and rough somebody underneath them. Who -- hoping to look for protection wise or maybe -- protection completely versus -- Campbell's trial. And you give protecting his own scheme -- man protection team and you can attack with some kind of -- he's protecting so. Goes to a few things that is the operation between the snapper Carr and suggested that the protection somewhere and some -- you think their week."
" Chris you've got one of the best punt blockers I was ever around -- had read -- I was got a kick out of watching. Work with the structures trying to set. Based on their analysis of what you're taking this portion of him. Or you start him up and I'll come underneath of me talk a moment about how that evolved during the week as well."
" No doubt I can remember accurately you're Ravens you know war and you had an outside the humanities Thomas. If I remember right inside. And so that -- to do we gotta get religion to people. Yeah it's painful for a while slot. Protection better. To pick up and they get state via their behavior running back at best. Usually helicopters attacked -- understand pass protection principles and punt protection is. He's got like Avery who can run around outside -- run underneath me his heartbeat see my -- personal protector and slam out there don't -- yet. Well that's okay unless you gotta be at least houses and inside rusher that's going to be getting -- yet. Beating senator -- want to yourself. You know you've got a couple guys that can put people -- and our protections ourselves look at it is America and it Nationsbank has to do more so we'll get back after us."
" Odds John thank you appreciate it -- good luck this week again. Right to -- big plays to show more of the biggest plays that fans releasing the love is the flea flicker everybody seems to run at least once a year. So on our Billick -- want segment let's look at the anatomy of the flea flicker."
" Let's talk about -- most common. Trick plays that you haven't are virtually everybody runs it. And trick plays great. Players have fun with -- they very rarely work but when they do it spectacular. Fans love -- almost -- your creative genius because you come up with this magnificent place. One did you see all the time primarily precinct and work a couple of times during the regular season is what we called pitch -- Important -- you call please please -- What -- gonna end up doing is giving Hart -- if they actually hand the ball off that you are. Offensive line plot totally sellout nick looked like to run the idea being that you're gonna get secondary now yeah. He would have exceeded all day off safeties that felt like -- Receiver in the run game -- school wideout -- to cut the cap and free safety of the ideas. Scream enough now. Get involved in the running game and stop right back me. Our act now going to line of scrimmage and he backward we -- will protect him against the outside right. -- timed and pitched it back to the time and such but by the time if it happens. One of these two guys who think -- expressionist. Then continues on down the middle of the field ops guy typically once. Starts to self -- I don't mean that -- recreational Broadway. We'll now go back to the quarter and hopefully get it behind at quarter to give the quarterback. Well we'll keep in a perfect world for example see this way he has -- or -- out the chance to get in behind them it's -- advice. Me -- quarterback he's got a pretty secure -- Flat protection he's got a whole bunch of people underneath ten yards. With one properly -- guys screaming down the field for him that make nice steak safeties -- free -- for a touchdown."
" We're now joined by Jack Del Rio in our coach speak presented by Samsung. And also this is -- star segment Jack presented by -- on an RC its star players Maurice. Jones-Drew talk talk about the good young running back you've got their."
" Well. He is a real champion and I think. You know memories is is a guy that loves to compete I think that the number one thing when we got here we're amazed. The young man that is short stature but very thick very muscular into. He does at all he's he's a guy that can pick up blitz you can block off the block of the president or -- linebacker is called to. But with the ball in his hands he's really explosive play. What do you draw up as his own runners he downhill guys you bring the -- talk a little bit about some of the schemes that you specifically try to use with him. He's had is -- between the tackles runner first and foremost in part what you want he want you always if you ask them what what player he once he once got play. The power. So here we lost power he ran power UIUCLA. And that's what he's been -- his life to do is run power he likes power he likes ice so he he likes downhill plays now. You know we do several things would that -- run outside zone with -- will cost him the ball. But his favorites -- those -- the power. Obviously you do what you have to do to winning games but are you aware of a pitch count on him are you conscious about not. So using him -- percentage and keeping -- and a 300 -- We we are in terms of you know our our ideal scenarios -- about twenty runs in the game. And really don't wanna go much beyond that he had to get 23 yard game this past week against Houston. Oh which which was at the upper end of where we were comfort zone is we we ideally like to give him twenty. Carries and then give him a few catches in the pass game and the end of heaven for kids is as well so that's right about the the maximum workload we'd like to have presumably after that. We recognize it is a long season if you. If you run him 35 times a week you know likely anybody in the back really in today's and a -- if you run on that that monster. A season gonna wear him down not have much of the players."
" when we come back find out what coaches do during a five week that in more we coach before Brian Billick presented by Sampson returns."
" Welcome back this is my segment we call how I see it presented by Samsung. You know over the weekend and TERRELL OWENS we've talked to some of the coaches about. Their willingness to try to. Bring about whatever record or benchmark that a player might have. Which didn't happen for Terrell Owens last week in in the Buffalo game. I'll start out by saying I'm not a big -- Owens' -- I don't particularly care -- the way that he approaches the game. And his selfish attitude towards but I will say this I was very up at listening to the line of questioning after the game. The reporters were clearly bought trying to date him and say something about his head coach -- coordinator his quarterback argument great deal of credit. Or showing the maturity to not go there and even in those responses people drew a lot from. Obviously he has made his own bed is the way people look at him and expecting those types of things. But now that I'm supposed -- on the media side I will say as one of the media I didn't appreciate the line of questioning about was very professional in the way they went about it I know you wanna get a story but to date him in that way I thought was unprofessional. And that was -- impressed by the fact that he did not. Buy into it and and held himself and did not go any further than he did I'm Brian Billick -- make them on LE DTV. And that's how I --"
" Mike. Obviously big plays are important and and were in a lot of in the league right now you actually -- one of the teams it has really done well. With explosive plays couple questions I have. You know I was worked off a philosophy that is if you're gonna average about 500 throws a year and if you're going to be one of the more explosive teams in the league which usually -- about fifteen plus. You know plays of twenty yards or more well might you know -- public school math that's rules and will be about one in ten plays. Has to be explosive do you have a time clock in your head. When when you haven't generated though sometimes that you go -- you know what I gotta take a shot here."
" You know I think consideration interesting have you ever -- ratio of one to ten a because of golf who -- I think the run game. For me personally dictates. Where the big plays come because. If you don't have a bounce them in the run and pass the really opportunities. Not come and go down film and were. Our offense particularly -- run the ball. These three weeks it would below those what -- those wells would like but we're still but I would create so wanna -- situations are good the golf ball was -- over. For good the -- Potomac before. And threw deep scheme. But I have but I have a pass -- listed. That we use every week if sports keep -- volume attack. And really do about the number of big play opportunity plays is part of that Kyle."
" How many if you could guestimate. Of the big plays come out of checks when you see maybe the single safety they've built the box and you've instructed your quarterbacks that you get this look forward to do such and such. Verses okay you're just okay I'm gonna take a shot here on on second medium because I know they're gonna get this kind of coverage."
" While fingers to type two types of big play opportunities and are generated the passing game that's as one Richard trying to create. Particularly off of a play action or in the played game we probably average part -- six throws a week in our -- that never decide. A have of going after the defense but you know and particularly look in on the second part of it is is a match up. Situation or after the protection of -- decide based concept. In a drop back passing game whether you're trying to double move a particular -- That used all the time you know whether it's particular coverage in particular -- of the -- trying to get."
" Yeah it strikes me as watching the games it seems just what your sent. There seems to be if I don't again I would not -- the more the big plays come off some type of play fake. As opposed to just a straight drop back and -- watch -- A poster go or something of that nature."
" On a dollar dominant that's the design of it but really really nothing more at our best it's generated by our players we. The last two -- three years we've we've been tops in the league in yards after the cats we fell off last year and it's ultimate. We wanna pick up. How were we were the last the deferred my first two years here and that's that's a three step game put the ball. And hands and your perimeter people in the break tackles and -- windows wanna wanna open wheel battles."
" They -- we appreciate the time. Now we had a chance to talk all the coaches about what they do on the bye week with they had that."
" Our approach basically was to it is fun time out. We'll try to make a decision about where you Zach. What's best for our team you know. We practice every day you know become frustrated we can do off. We hope we don't feel like practice and help us maybe I'm wrong or something between you just have to make that decision we'll try to have a normal Monday. Tuesday is off for the players of course. We'll have a heavy work -- on Wednesday and Thursday. And we'll take a long weekend."
" Will put him at -- they've been through. And spend on yourself. As coaches were really good football team. What for a while we -- four and we have also the Thanksgiving game -- due for another opportunity if he refuses to believe that the helpful hopeful. I wanna give them more than just the weekend off. I think it's important. Two. Two to let these guys have some time. I think they've been working material ball hopefully I trust that we deliver in that time."
" One thing west all the coaches about we're starting in the bye weeks. And everybody obviously approaches a little bit differently. What what when it comes time here by what what what approach you're gonna take how much time you let the players get away. -- did you let your coaches get away and can you really get away would you take that little bit of time."
" Well Brian we're faced in our bye week this week we've got these. The early by so we're. It's something that I've never experienced this early and we're gonna approach a little bit differently if it's later on in the season we've given the guys on the whole week off and since it's sorely were gonna work a couple of days we came in the day and watch tape and finish up our stuff from the game on the on Sunday. And we'll give the players are normal day off on Tuesday and then -- come in and work in the mornings on Wednesday and Thursday and our focus is going to be on our team not really any game planning and then we're on give up. Give the weekend off and that's not only the players but the coaches as well the coaches are all out of the building the night and that. We're gonna work normally to five hours here this weekend to get ready for that thirteen game stretched -- this regular season."
" Now when you get away what what would you do can you get elected first talking to really get away or I was talking Jack -- railroad. He's as he sneaks off to the bathroom until Linda can -- and he's drawn up blitzes against Peyton Manning in the about him an attempt to show when. Can you can you really separates self from."
" You know it's very difficult to do. Well at least we're not we're not here in the office you know I know our guys. -- need time away not only the players but the coaches we're going to be thing about. Improving not what we you know on what we've done so far and that and looking ahead to share -- San Francisco because we've got to west coast trip coming up. Thanks Mike if you have a question force that you -- have read out on coach speak you can and -- to a head coach Pete. At fox dot com lunch with benefits continues tomorrow with the college experiment the who -- to have in store for."
" November post fighting that's done and I'm --"
" All the college experiment."
