" And now it."
" This week -- coach Pete would viability presented by -- stuff. Rex Ryan talk with Jim Schwartz to exist inside linebackers tell them. All of -- more coach before Brian Billick present advice and so."
" What this week's version coach speak presented by Sampson. This week our coaches John Fox Jim -- Rex Ryan. And Jim Schwartz we're gonna talk a little bit about. Building pressure packages and how to defend against pressure packages I'm joined -- my first -- job fox. Coming off -- buying big game against Washington this weekend jibe with the by following. Coming as early as it did for you tell me a little bit how you approached the bye week and then how that altered this week's preparations Washington."
" I think Ryan to start the season when I looked and I thought how we get caught. -- the third week. As it turned out -- we've got a lot of injuries we've got dealt with all during the pre season. They're really gonna come -- battered so. Got a chance to get guys healthy and if that's we use this week for number one together you know refreshed physically and ultimately him. To work on some things in particular that we didn't do -- and his guys healthy."
" How do you decide what to much and too little with the bye week you wanna get impressions you said. But by the same token you need to get a certain amount done in the did you put the pads on during the bye week at all."
" No we didn't we have in the past and related wanna start that ball in our issues have been war medals and and and physical so. You know it was a good -- we worked him -- Wednesday and Thursday. Last week in game Friday at. Our. You know back in the early this week and already hugely against Washington start Wednesday."
" When you're looking at putting into a pressure package. Do you begin with you're looking for individual matchups are you looking to defeat the scheme just outnumber the side where where do you tennis star when you. Put your partial package."
" I always look at you know always remembers him. There's certain front. They you it and this is how they protective whether they wanted gap slide it. Any kind of tennis in my hand you can dictate then. What protection values and and you all know being an office I have some years there's. A hole and reproduction system that are you know what -- and which ones come so. A lot of what you do I think it is based on attendance is an -- and you know matchups are always apartment. You know a lot of that depends who you what kind of coverage you play high temperatures. Hawkins as a variety those types of things. Actual protection weathered -- back -- back. You know if you do. Barry -- they're gonna slide which way they slide away from that that. Some of the colleges try to dictate and you know you can. Kind of forced the protection you."
" I'll see we got I got your game frosty the -- on Friday's practice I've got -- good run support anybody. This week on Billick -- one we're gonna talk about the difference between man and zone defense."
" Let's talk about the concept of man versus zone defense we talked many times about football very much. Geographical game -- it's about numbers and angles I'm gonna try to get superior numbers at the point of attack more blockers and you have tacklers were tacklers to you have blockers. I can't get that would try to get some period angle. Give my player a better angle to do his job done that you future player and finally if that doesn't match up. I wouldn't match up my player on your player -- See who's got the best guy. The basic concept let's start with his own defense is is that its most basic elements you can running through teams don't worth three deep zone. In typical Judy -- which are basically saying is I'm gonna drop. Five underneath people typically inactivity on the gonna -- outside linebacker. From corner to bring this linebacker here I'm gonna have to deep zones that the safety and free safety irresponsible. Four hour and a half five underneath -- To make it very difficult did the fault rule under the when you plays on defense you better have a very athletic and a very good tackling football team because the whole idea is to force the quarterback dropped the ball off. We're gonna rally that it is a ball carrier make the tackle and minimize the game at fourth quarterback to drop the ball underneath. You can adapt this -- obviously now this is -- three games I'll. Now where you typically might just as we've talked about. Three deep zone is gonna take corner to a team are typically a free safety to repeat third you're going to replace. Strong safety he's 100 games the home and you're gonna drop the quarterback underneath. Typically -- three deep zone stronger right now outside linebacker to let this week like outside linebacker right here and now I'm gonna have eight. Three deep. Four under -- zone three deep obviously better against the golf ball. Four guys and he's not quite as good 500 the but he did you get something to get something. Zone defense could be very effectively but it's good quarterback Tom Brady Peyton -- against a very static zone defense is gonna pick you apart. Nickel and dime you to -- down the field. Man defense is real simple and we refer to it is basically a catchy. -- defense mandate that says that you take that catch you take that can't go anywhere you want all -- the field. Typically you see -- man defense that simply says I'm one on one with you. I'm one on one -- you bring much talk safeties now maybe you want on one with the tight end he might free safety in the middle of the field. Maybe three defense is the term she here more often not now I'll get my facts. Combination. On somebody out of the backfield. And bring more people that you could. -- And if this guy at least outside I'll field outlets. These days and blocked off day ops and I'll blitz the outside will gobble him up will get more pressure on the quarterback. You can't get more reps on the quarterback problem as you're very vulnerable. If this got beat this guy and you got down ralphie down the route row. Now there's a whole bunch of people behind the ball against the guys just got beat. That's -- you -- doubts this deep so both defense obviously moved in and out of the very ecstatic safe zone concept. Some you can bleed to death slowly good quarterback with the Brooklyn Dodgers death. Versus the heavy pressure package that now is. High risk high reward I get the quarterback but I am a great risk because at 11 matchup at all takes is for what got to get -- and now simply."
" Then we'll still to come on coach before Brian Billick presented by Samsung give ward talked about big hit you on defense in the NFL. We'll be back after."
" Sunday."
" Welcome back coach speak presented by Samsung we're now joined by the head coach in Detroit Lions Jim Schwartz. Jim -- to ask the coaches about pressure packages obviously law year old you were a long time defense of coordinator. When you in all pressure package in your deciding how to pressure team. Do you begin with look at matchups are you looking at ways to violate the protection scheme how to usually start out when you wanna put -- pressure package."
" Really the first thing we looked at was how quarterback handled the pressure. We had a real that we looked at a an era cut ups that was nothing Bob -- Against. Past place. And you wanted to see okay how does quarterback do is the inefficient version blitzes -- efficient as -- dig deep shots you take you know potted hot adjustments -- routes. Stuff like that. Then we sort of moved to -- protections and -- from their individual matchups so it was sort of a three tiered process."
" When now when you were able to add recently over the last year that coached to two defensive player communicate -- much like the coach to quarterback. Did that change how you were able to call games or anything about the mechanics of what you could do the fact that you could get it directly in -- whatever. Tips to that of the whoever you have on helmet."
" I'll no doubt it was of the big change number one you could say okay this is the defense we're going -- On alert to screen or alert to max protect or you know different things like that. But you could also give individual allow players should reminders hey we have this blitz called remember we're gonna call the weak side of the formation -- Or remembered -- tell you know so and so that he asked to drop and different things like that things that the offense coordinators have -- for a long time with the offensive players. Defense we're -- to catch up just a little --"
" Now your your play the Pittsburgh Steelers this week. Did you think there's anything you can lend to your young quarterback to give him as a is there anything that you could share with with the young Matthew Stafford about how to handle these different pressures that might add to his perspective."
" You know. That and don't give -- ball quick. Not a whole life yeah don't hold. Yeah I don't hold of that that's good advice don't get sacked yeah there's there's little bit of things here I mean I've seen that defense an awful long time you know sort where. The weak spots -- defense but you know if he asked that. He has to gain that experience themselves the only way he's gonna get comfortable plane pressure team like that. Is to go well and to actually experience himself there's no substitute for experience and -- not time to open the mail -- delivered by Samsung. Coach -- Thomason Pensacola Florida right coach or one -- at a good time to go for a fourth down. How do you how do you decide when you're going to do that you. You know first thing is if it's late in the game and we're down two scores. We're pretty much always critical world war now when -- upon them on a situation where. You know where we're gonna run o'clock at the end of the game -- games whether it's fourth 124. To go for those situations. The other ones typically are going to be in the in the plus fifty side of the ball when the offenses. Is in the defense of territory. You know on their times where you're right on the fringe of field goal range and you're gonna lineup for a 57 yard field or 55 yard field goal. And you know maybe you're worried about making that it you know and you don't -- because there's sort of -- on. You go world some of those fourth bounds and then sometimes. When you're down in close in the fourth and one inside the ten yard line. There is pretty high percentage will go for some of those also imagine you have."
" Structure in place when your in that gray area. As of fuel gold -- field goal is you have a standard operating procedure which you coordinator when you will click over and tell page you're in four down territory so it's not be surprised with."
" No doubt you have -- while we get third down -- will try to alert him to. You know the F word around here make sure you have a play ready. We had some of those situations commonwealth are now we've lost yardage or we didn't gain reading game right amount so obviously we put upon team owner. The field goal team on we also deserving of our special teams coach. And look if we gain yards here we're gonna we're gonna go field goal. If not the rules and on team on so everybody that it's everybody's on the headsets everybody's alert you try to stay one step. One play ahead registered to let everybody have a chance to make the right decisions."
" I Jim I appreciate it meant tuck -- of that and move on that next one. Yeah it's it's it's just Pittsburgh -- or is that -- department operatives are chip thanks a lot less. Your question from -- the coaches you can email coach Pete fox dot com. Follow us on putter head coach. We're joined by the head coach who watched redskins' Jim zorn Jim I've been talking that turns out a lot of deep threats of coaches about pressure packages. Amid should talk with you about. When you're going to a game and you're looking at a team pressure package. What the main things you looking for your looking for matchups. Are you looking for ways to take advantage of it may before explosives down fielder just hold up again that what your approaches you start out looking at pressure packages."
" Yes that's a good question if but it comes in sections one when a team starts exposes their pressure package. We have to know that ours our protection schemes will hold up against it. So we we we work a lot of hours working on our rules do they hold up what what expert calls what difficulties. Do we face with a different types of schemes that they're doing with their pressures. And then with the types of pressures comes also certain type of coverage either zones or man coverages or even all out blitzes."
" Do you in any viewers tend to think in terms of the things that it happened do you most recently but you played in this league a long time. Do you do we see -- more pressures or do you remember not being or being pressured as such as quarterbacks are being --"
" we're seeing more exotic pressure you know the way that defensive coordinators think these things out. They are put their defenders in great positions to be to come free. It's -- I mean -- if if a team just blitzes one linebacker. These days most teams can pick that up but when you put that linebacker. In a stunt. And have a defense alignment come all the way down over the -- defense event coming all the way down on the honor. And then how the tackle -- around and have a linebacker come inside of that. There's a lot of communication has to take place with that whole line and and back and or tight end. And that's where things become more difficult."
" When you're when you're giving information to the quarterback. Do you have to be careful about how much information given them because if you've had to dial it back you find yourself giving him too much information."
" The only time I've found myself giving too much information is really. Maybe between series or or at a at a time out or something like that wore a -- mariner. You know remember this remember that and I and almost give too much information but it's never during a series. I may say -- makes a hey remember this is that there's a blitz down. Or I'm -- blitz here or I'm thinking zone here or I'm thinking this of that but. Mainly I'm just calling that. You know obvious calling the personnel group on the play and that's enough information we've gone over enough where I feel like he should. He should get in the huddle call playing it up -- one scrimmage."
" And we're getting all communicated appear. -- time who -- versus Friday and a walk or Braves all these. Michael is going through my -- I remember -- first out of the system I literally got some pizza delivery guy. During the middle of the game in terms of -- which made her interest to situation."
" And I had Hispanic and radio I've -- radio. It in my headset and I've had I've had the S stadium kitchen. Yeah on out. A menu items so I had an operative. Jim I appreciated and we will I've got together this weekend and we'll see you down the hotel on Saturday night. Brian will report is he on Sunday. Life on the ice -- it -- and it. Back after."
" Welcome back to coach speak presented by Samsung we ask the coach is about Twitter seems like it's on the president's everywhere. Asked him if they even knew what was how it's affecting their team."
" kind of nonsense. Personally I don't like being an elegant whole they probably won't spend time help with money went out with a bit of a distraction but it also can be of that danger because. I think there's a lot of information that can be inadvertently revealed it's an issue -- think got better better or worse because. In this era of instant information society Arnold -- I don't follow anybody or whether. But our players do people follow our players and some things that. You know or are very tame comments and get blown out of proportion quite honestly have never been on what are I don't really don't. You know I understand that that's a big part of things down estimates that it is a reflection on their team. And hopefully they'll learn to handle was responsible for Asians like you'll. You know an interview with your local media you know being in saves and a good -- and -- here in here talking on Twitter."
" Out there and continue and when your head coach in the NFL you have a lot of fires to put out -- daily basis Twitter. Social networking sites like that add to those one joined by the head coach of the New York Jets Rex Ryan. Rex. You had your first taste -- defeat not an easy one let me ask you this and and I know when I first came head coach. Has the system the good thing was you got Monday out of your way just moved on to the next one that was a good thing bad thing was when you won you didn't get to enjoy it as much. This linger for you a little longer now as the head coach that's something that's gonna take will get used to."
" Yeah you know hopefully they'll get used to losing but it's that you're used to aspect that. But you know it is something you know you look at the whole picture now years you know it's. Unites -- focus you know my whole focus isn't just on now one unit -- I get the whole team and and you know clearly got to rely on your assistant coaches and and you know. We were fortunate we got a lot of great teachers and things like that so. You know I think we're gonna pull out of this but again you know I'm. You know blessed to have a coaching staff I have that. Words really not just as much on my shoulders I can just lean on on on you know those guys."
" Rusch were at the point of the show what we have our Samsung he would star segment this week it's gonna focus on Mark Sanchez. Do you think that mark was better prepare for what he was conceived during the regular season because of all the blitzes that you threw at him in training camp."
" You know I thought so you know and I think so. It's funny because we still do it the way we used to. You know two minute situations you know defense. Throws everything at -- it's not that we're doing you know opponent specific things you know kind of the same things. That I learned from you that you know -- there's no guarantee that you're gonna see this kind of defense or. We're gonna see this time offense so I always think that's a good thing it's a competitive. Thing and really he's you know young man's done well. You know for the most part assist. You know just one of those things it was a bad day I remember Joe Flacco last year were played. That Tennessee Titans having you have four interceptions that day so you're right I think it happens to everybody and you know it's just the thing work he's got to realize that you know rely and you teammates that you know you don't have to do things yourself. You know you're just part of the solution you know have to be the solution. You gotta pretty good defense there we got an outstanding running game -- an -- off -- line and let's just just rely -- that."
" Is there anything you have found you've been able to help him win in terms of your expertise. In pressure packages that you've been able to import on him and certain terms us and it looked mark. When they do this or that they're going to be vulnerable here so Q I mean are you able to help him specifically given your unique perspective."
" You know hide I try to talk to him more about. You know like avoiding the rush you know stepping up knowing your protections where word you know you expect. You know where you can expect the pressure we can expect you know how to slider step away from things. That's about it how to protect the football and unfortunately. We have done a great job of that you know we of this -- in the end zone. You know where he never realized that speed in this league is as we know is a lot a lot faster and any college you know what's presented to -- in front media. That's all fine and dandy but it's that the thing you don't see that gets here and you know he's still work and and that you know. And plus I think New Orleans had a good job of disrupting the timing of around you know they got our face they they challenged our receivers and and that's so we gotta get better -- we have to get better releasing him. And you know getting hope."
" When you put your pat puts packs together whose talk a little there is no wrecked in terms of you start looking for matchups to violator protection do you start looking at tried to violate the protection to -- self. To just out of where when you when you decide okay here's the pressure package against this team where do you tend to start."
" To the start you know what's funny is both those things are obviously really important. But the person I look at is one of the attack you know what are the protections. Can we get a beat on their protections you know when they're in. Trips they -- running. You know scant protection back always you know to the open side are they gonna run. You know why have beat up and -- seven man protection where the dual reads are if there is any any such thing so always wanna attack the protection -- blitzes the other thing -- you know is. Do we have an advantage. You know him in -- we have Chris changes is there an advantage -- put Chris over the left guard France and that we think we can win that that matchup almost. Every time. So maybe we don't need him to rush with everybody and all out but maybe we get that one on one match up by being in a certain front there will take advantage of that as well. You know so we're always looking -- and everything but it starts with -- identified protections first. And then he goes to. You know the individual one on one matchups."
" I've been we've got to be good division rival this week while we watch him. All right sounds good."
" Now time for you -- segment we call how I -- presented by Samsung. He remembers talking about with the rash of penalties that have come over the last couple days in particular the Ravens knowingly game about. How -- overprotective quarterback when you put skirts on them that we've taken with physicality of the game. But that we turned the sports page and we read about the concussions. The dementia that being brought in question with the former players. Just the number of injuries that the players are susceptible to think it's really important. That we keep our priorities in the proper perspective. This league has done a great deal in conjunction with the union. To make sure that all the rules we have ours at a premium with regard to keeping the players healthy and it. And when that rule comes into question because what happens on the field where the outcome -- me how -- affected the game sometimes we tend to overreact so. Yeah as a coach sometimes frustrating when these calls are made. You can always disagree that whether a call shooter should not have been made. But we can't do is find ourselves in the position where were questioning whether the safety of the players is indeed being compromised or not. Because that always has to be hard fast rule as to. Being -- priority number one. Job number one of making sure that the players -- stay healthy and -- I'm Brian Billick this is my Samsung LED and that's how I see. Once with benefits continues on Wednesday with a college experiment with what they have in store."
" About college football like you've ever seen him on the ball. -- Mavericks host fighting -- as dozens and hot public. All the talent. Experiment."
" That's -- for this week's installment of goofy things with the next week will be to -- by Jack Del -- job hardball and Mike Smith Mike Singletary don't forget the Dallas up next week every two Q when he. What's the benefits coach speak on fox sports."
