" For instance it's."

" This week and coach speak with Brian Billick presented by Samsung will go inside the stat sheet would -- its head coach Jim Schwartz. Wade Phillips we'll talk about how he plans to slow down Michael the burner turner. And Mike McCarthy will tell us why this guy could -- the limit for Aaron Rodgers. That is more coach before Brian Billick presented by Samsung."

" Welcome to this week's edition of coach speak presented by -- got a great show we have these weekend we're introduced to something called the fox talks rating. Which is nothing more than the variables statistically of turnovers and explosions. And how they work with one another how important is the National Football League. Want to talk to the coaches about a number of important issues going on in the league right now. This week we're joined by Wade Phillips of the Dallas Cowboys. John Fox the Carolina Panthers. Rex Ryan of the New York Jets. Jim Schwartz and four lines Mike McCarthy the Green Bay Packers. -- more welcome in Jim zorn from the Washington Redskins and Jim it's always. A fishbowl. A hole in National Football League it's all about what is now. Let me ask you this won't take a little bit different -- 'cause obviously you it's it's a tough time -- organization right now. What do people not know about that the -- you're sitting in right now with the biggest thing that. That you wish people could understand -- get a better understanding. About your responsibilities."

" Well my responsibilities run the gamut of whatever happens first thing in the morning tool whenever we leave that night and it has everything to do with. The football team the players the trainers the equipment people. How we schedule our weak our practice is the coaches and then the big -- that a lot of people don't realize is how much is involved with. Speaking for the team and making sure people understand. The directions the vision. That goals that are trying to be Matt."

" When my last year ball more one of the reasons. I was -- going Baltimore is that. When you are the head coach and the play caller. It's hard for people to separate those sometimes you know as a head coach responsible for a lot of things in the -- team wins hopefully. As a play caller you'll be our guest on 1200 calls a year every run should've been a pass -- and run. When you combine the two together that's a lot and eventually cost me is Ozzie Newsome told me when they let me -- Baltimore. We did fire the head coach we just fires a coordinator you just happen to be one in the same. Talk a little bit about. The difficulty in separating those two jobs because of the demands of one over the other one."

" Well. Number one you know. I love calling plays and I have confidence and I think I'm good -- it. And yet when we don't you feel put the ball in the end zone with what is being called. And that's that's where you know that's kind of where the rub -- I get that so. To separate it. What I do is I have a good group around me that helped. Put this game plan together and I'm involved with that but I'm also doing my head coaching duties as well. I -- study a lot of video and I've got the only reason that I can do what I do is I've got a strong defensive coordinator. I've got a strong very strong special teams coach and those guys can -- here. A lot of the you know two thirds relief of the program and then like -- Concentrated on time on the offensive side of the ball. I'm disappointed that you would get fired over that because and I know what it is to call plays and year what's your feeling. It and what I'm doing is trying to call the plays that best suit. The the offense in the skated in. In the abilities that that can be exploited. And then you know trying to be as aggressive as you can be and still be successfully down field. That's what makes it fun that's what all the strategies about that's what we what I live for really."

" Are there two or three things. That -- go look at particular -- often saw the ball going forwards are okay. In a nutshell here are two or three things that we have to accomplish over the next couple weeks ago about."

" Yeah -- are red zone are red zone. Executions got to improve we've got to be able to score when we get down. In scoring area not just field goals but put the ball across. We have to protect the QB. Like we do at times I mean we're really pretty good in our past pro. And then we have a breakdown and we just it's the breakdowns that are killing us in critical situations. But other than that you know those the two main areas I think -- let me just there I think we need to. Get our our young receivers. Even more involved in or out -- up to speed. In what we're doing as well what we're trying to accomplish. Other than that. You know on property please I think our quarterback play will improve. Based on our pass pro based on on our run game play action things like that."

" Out thyme -- its star segment presented by Nam song we're joined by Mike McCarthy a coach in green bay Packers and his star quarterback Aaron Rodgers might. Errands on pace for a phenomenal year better than 4600 yards a 26 touchdown six interception -- talk talk about your great quarterback."

" Well -- goes all the little things and that's that that's something you always see. And look for him and development. Of the quarterback. In an -- slip -- goes about his business these guys have an opportunity coming their learning office. So severe time ago great veteran player -- for and it -- you know -- The man's it was -- to last year and don't value as someone insulted slugger -- also film. Around the league on him so. He doesn't -- don't -- offense and the little things but as in treatment in the office and if you know for the most part -- what the defense gives them."

" You know I just did the occurs on -- game and someone familiar familiar with with Matt Hasselbeck it was interesting. You know part of those numbers also for -- is is you're on pace for a sack total I know you're not only should stood talking about. How do you how do you adjust. Protections and obviously you've been doing some injured offensive linemen like -- hasn't Seattle. It was interesting you know we've seen a team like Philadelphia the rookie and injured quarterbacks what's this -- the edges plotted out and a man protection play action. For -- he was more about I don't know if you if you do that and I just limiting -- to receivers. Did everybody out I'll protect myself a look at the ball out of my hand where where do you know how do you straddle that with --"

" That's an excellent point -- and that's that's really kind of a process that we've gone through her over this probably period because. You know with the ability -- to strap on the edges like as you stated but also you know brings him. The potential receivers. Figured US senate veteran quarterback. I think there are differences of opinion. If -- Greta do you -- again tomorrow and play faster so. But we're you know we're we're trying to find a common ground because. Would with a perimeter players that we have that. Buckle bottom play run you know play actions say passing game. Don't know would argue utilizing all of our assets so and that that's the middle ground that we've we've been trying to hit her wrist this week we or selective or cycles -- while some way way too hard."

" Much more on the way including Brian Billick to box out rating system find out if your team makes a great that -- coach before Brian Billick presented by Sampson he did. --"

" Welcome back coach speak now gonna get into my favorite part of the show it how I see it presented by stamps -- You know there's a lot of statistics that flowed out there but it tries to quantify what's important what's not in this game. And there's something that I have long thought and have long been a part of the statistical now of this league we're gonna caught the fox talks -- Basically what it stands force turnovers and explosives. This game for a long time turnovers and explosives have long been major determinant for success made the top two determines -- that. In the National Football League now explosive play as determined by the National Football League is any gain of twenty yards or more. So what I've done over the last few years is to come bring needs to take stick together. And take the differential in turnover which you see -- in and stat sheets every week. And the differential an explosion of play you don't see that as much. Combined those two given a number and he were that rates to try to get an idea of how one team rates tune. Compares to another."

" Let's look at some statistics from last year look at the top ten team. In the toxic -- that's the combination. Turnover differential and explosion differences you can see at the top of 2008 was the Super Bowl champs Pittsburgh Steelers. They had 47 explosive plays plays when he allowed them. They gave up only 27 that was a differential one. There turnover differential as you can see here with sports of their total their top -- but if you look. Ten of the top ten teams in this Cox reading all ten made the play. Typically if you go back over the few years there might be eight out of 109 I think there's not another statistical rating. That is so determinant in terms of getting to the playoffs and that's our ultimate ball right now sort of went through people. Let's look at 2009. Where we are right now obviously we've got a lot of football left to play but if you look at the top five team. New Orleans Indianapolis Denver Green Bay and knowing what you're talking about five teams that are playing very well right now. Conversely if you look at the flip side of the bottom five to Carolina Saint Louis Tennessee Oakland we've. With the exception of Carolina and there's always going to be one now. Those teams are -- good teams that are struggling the most in this league."

" So I think he'd what will now call the fox talks rating is a legitimate way for us going forward we're gonna do this on a regular basis and I'm gonna do as well during that. The season as I do -- telecast with Thom Brennaman and Chris Myers is used as talks rating. To get a sense of where the teams are how they match up with one another deceived we use this barometer. To anticipate how the game might go. I'm Brian Billick this is my hand on LED and that's how I see let's see what some of the other coaches have to say about explosive plays and turnovers."

" Explosive plays real important Bryant isn't losing resultant points in the -- like that. He wouldn't change field position you know get in the scoring zone. Others. -- of the field goal."

" Obviously. You can't give up those big plays and that's something you always talked tackles explosive plays. Usually make a huge difference in mentality is you gotta stay aggressive. Why you know to make sure you're not expose yourself as in don't -- recklessly."

" throw the ball. About 500 clobbered -- times a year like most teams in the NFL. Means you need to generate that explosive player about 110. One and one of if you don't have the big shots down -- if you don't come with school supplies in today's NFL it's very hard. Look at explosive. Both. Most of the ball is Rolen leads the points. On the board so. It's ultimate dormitory and we're joined now my lines -- coach Jim Schwartz I know you're new or one of the the big."

" Statistical analysis guys like myself the that I -- appreciated what are some of the other hidden statistical things that you look at that you think are really important that maybe the most fans aren't -- aware of."

" You know do you hit turnovers and you -- explosive plays third down percentage. And then also sacks and you know if you if you give up a sack on offense. I'm pretty much and your drive if you're looking at second and eighteen it's going to be hard to get a first down if you look in the third and fourteen. It's hard to get a first down and if you get sacked on third down obviously it stops to drive for your off that drive -- your field goal attempt or no points. I want defense if you can make that sack it makes it really hard for an offense to convert and you know when you talk about limiting scoring or scoring points you talk about stopping drives or keeping drives alive and those are. You know acts translate really good to matters -- translate to a positive -- that at third down percentage you can keep drives alive. You know it's it's great chance to score points of view if you're good on defense you get off the field on third down. Can you give up a couple plays on first and second down just by stockman and stop my drive on third down."

" You have such a -- sense of what it takes to win in this league in terms of defensively offensively those things statistically that make a difference particular over long record time. Does that help you to dictated terms of priority you put on your personnel look we -- if putting quarterback. Putting pressure on the quarterback sacks is that important that we've got to put a priority on this type of player and if you. Did not giving up act is important that we got to put a priority about -- players well you do do they go hand him."

" Oh it sure does you know people when people talk about statistics they like to thank. Maybe present button somewhere and it -- not a play call. And that's not how we use what we do as we look and say okay what are the important areas of football game. Which translates well to scoring. Which translates well to limiting scoring. And say okay what how to we stress those areas and you do that in your offseason program. You do that you're training camp you do that you weekly schedule we do from a coaching staff preparation standpoint. And and you also doing from the draft and free agent acquisitions standpoint you know baseball stats are a lot different in football stats. Simply because it is under 62 games in in baseball people for going under 62 times. It's gonna be really close to 8181. If you look at points sixteen times. You know you may have about twelve heads and four tiles. You know the longer if things go all the more stats of Mara I think is really important you need to have a field pre game you need to be able players and I know which are players can accomplish. But from a preparation standpoint from a team building from from use of time standpoint I think stats are incredibly about it. That's a great about an element of doing that make my own as a guard take away -- some heroic character Arsenal all."

" I Jim thanks now we're joined by our good friend in New York Rex Ryan -- I gotta tell -- I looked at the box scores of your game and I I don't know that I've -- quite -- The numbers like that on either side win or lose talked to me that little bit about. About the way you ran the ball and you hear the turnovers you're you're still were right there it was a it was not looking game."

" Yeah really was and I agree with him mean you know you rush the ball for 318. Yards but I mean. There's no way you lose a game I mean there's. I mean that that's incredible yet the fact we threw six interceptions. And were still in the game you know that that's another thing that's you know. File that Ripley's believe it or not but. You know so good news bad news and you know unfortunately we ended up on the wrong side of it."

" You know in the first day of training camp -- I know you prepare your team for the loss of of of the top player because it happens to every team. But you took a big hit with the loss of Chris Jenkins talk a little bit about what that does --"

" Yeah we sure did I mean you know really Cruces. You know there's not to many Kristi -- you know out there in the league maybe one or two guys put you know that's that's a huge force in the middle. He's an athlete's you know all of that and and it's going to be huge loss for us but. You're exactly right we've always said it that you know. You know you're gonna need your entire roster whether you're on developmental squad whatever it is -- Egypt and you know the guys have got to step up in and you know the strength of our team is we have some guys that you know we have a lot of you know good backups or whatever -- role players is gonna have much bigger role now markets Douglas A yes the only who eight. You know just Mike Devito guys that that we know can play. But our depth you know -- our depth is really strength of our team so. You know there's not one guy that can replace Kristi -- it might might have to be three or four guys but. We've got to find a way to get it done in and I have confidence in in our coaches have confidence in our players at that. You know that will overcome it -- albeit it's not going to be easy I mean he's he's a special player and it's rodeo fortune that we that we lost. I'm Rangel gonna you we will."

" Much more on the way including Wade Phillips previewing the cowboys' week seven matchup with a high flying now it's. That's what -- coach speak with Brian -- presented by -- continued. --"

" Welcome back coach speak were joined by -- head coach John Fox jobs just up in Seattle and and we've we've dealt with young man Owen -- did it put the helmet to a head by his head open you had an unfortunate and on your game. What Dante Wesley talk will be about how a young man finds and help -- situation and then and then how you help him through."

" Well I think number one you know these guys are playing the game is very competitive. You know they gotta make split second decisions and it happens all over the field offense defense. And special teams and I think -- case. Earlier in the game he would. Thought what you've seen as a fair catch kind of eased up he plays -- you know he's again it gives that raised him -- right away. You know without penalty and he got down there and -- and you know anybody off their kids and took off in six yards. You know and so anyone that. He's pretty Republicans. He was going down the field and -- is it fair catch but he was you know read hands and you arrived. Slightly --"

" The are you guys -- great day run the ball you whatever game plan you have four run the ball and know you kind of last year when you play Tampa thing was your second in attempting to kind of cranked up those same numbers. But you had two backs over a hundred yards that's going to be -- that's going to be on those game plans next time you play in just to pick up where you left off and we'll change a thing."

" I think you know we were able to -- what people in a lot of fans don't realize is is on defense dictates kind of what you do offensively at times so. You know Steve Smith. Who they are real good receiver. Gets double covered a lot and a lot of people are doing so does opens some things up in the run game. That's why we ran the ball so many times it was some efficiencies. Which is a good thing."

" Now and used to alluded to a job obviously teams are gonna do things to take away your dynamic receiver Steve Smith. That opens up opportunities for someone else and obviously we've -- that. Position where then all of a sudden he gets a little frustrating. For Steve Smith -- kind of vocal as players will be. About. You know -- I need the ball more and you know nobody wants to participate how do you deal with the players that go through that kind of Ron -- teams are doing things specifically take them away and not get the ball away you know every play ones."

" You know that's probably in his review on the island and head coaches. What are the things he's been a lot of time on guns in the mindset of -- team and -- extremely competitive and yeah he wants to helped the team win. That's our job as coaches to design is many things we can but really at the end of the day. You can't call the your opponent's head coach and ask him not to do that and so you gotta do what it takes to win and in our case yesterday -- that was to be able to run the ball. The ball a little bit around and you know we only got the ball -- one time they played him a lot of press coverage and a lot of double coverage and makes it difficult."

" John thank you for joining us now we're go to Billick one no one will get a chance -- talk about the proverbial eight man box."

" You can't listen to an NFL broadcast today and not hear the term eight man boxes -- it's become very full term. For basically just griping that the defense is ability to drop an extra man. Into the defense the front primarily to stop the run -- talk about how teams get to that primarily. In a standard defense obviously you're going to have would you please don't sometimes -- man you're gonna have let's say Ian Kennedy's own. They're gonna happen quarter and safeties couldn't zone them off your linebackers. Into coverage and and work what we talked about that plastic and 500 me with a four man rush. Stopping the run you coaches there we've talked about our job cardinal won't play or. -- to stop the run and ordered -- let's go back role to play this game is a game of numbers and -- try to put more people a point of attack you have to block. -- blockers have packed with to get our running game going and -- typical seven. Front that stretch the defense would match up might be in favor of the office so what teams will do is they'll show some type of zone. Don't look at the last minute they'll drop that strong state boxing with Indianapolis Colts job when it maybe one of the best. Drop that down. Eight man box built in the history of the game. And now I'm building -- superior numbers I have -- traditional seven man front. And I added a -- equation invite me back strong safety down into the team. And now the additional thing if I don't have to explain what this I can play zone I can still get myself into week three deep zone. Taking the corners that the team outside search for free safety in the middle I may replace the Hawks take -- pearl. -- area and bring this back on the outside I may drop into coverage. It's a wide range eight man box I'm not committed to playing defense. Whether vulnerabilities on the outside and by worrying about eight men in the box the most typical state is not just the number count. Like bring the extra man out battle out to take my -- back and and woven into the gap. He's very aggressively album right now I can loop I can start I'm gonna give them not only superior numbers but I'm -- my individual defenders. Superior angle to float -- the cap and just disrupt the slot formation of the all."

" I would join -- head coach of the Dallas cowboys' Wade Phillips way did you obviously had a a week off obviously that the troops cochlear arrested fresh. You cut back your plan really one of the better backs in the league and Michael Turner and we just at a session on coach speak here on the eight man box. Talk to us a little bit about how you account how important is to account for really good back like Michael Turner."

" Well you certainly have to see errors 150 yards again last year so. You know you try to stop them the two best players and he certainly that so and I'm from anywhere because I was within minutes San Diego so. He's right he's a really good players really fast for his size to. -- so. You know we we. You know of course we'll work on the players of that we feel -- there and run. But then you trying to -- player that they can block it's a situation."

" Yeah and they've got some tell us Michael Turner they get Tony Gonzales the gut -- on the outside -- who quarterbacks playing very well. You know it is indeed when you play a team like. Atlanta that is multi talented it does that still come down -- was the basics of you've got to stop the run first as -- really that simple."

" I think that's always I think that's where we approaches. You really have to. Cannot thank you have to establish -- you stop the run and once you do that then not think you can. You know Europe for the quarterback and -- and that's really the name of the game worn lines is that how the quarterback --"

" Thanks for join his way field questions from your one of the coaches you can email -- coach -- at fox dot com. Or fall upon what coach what would benefits continues on Wednesday with a college experiment with they have on hand."

" This week on the college experience. He college football experience I've never seen it before and -- in the reverend -- hot college girls fighting mascots. And did we mention hot girl with fellow. There's a reason it's called the college experiment paying now no one and that's it."

" That's at this week's version of coach please join us next week will be joined by coaches like John Harbaugh Mike Singletary Mike Smith. -- every Tuesday at 1 PM eastern standard time. On coach speak part of the exclusive -- with benefits program here on foxsports.com."
