" And now it."
" This weekend -- with Brian Billick presented by Sam -- and we'll find out what makes a good half times. We'll we'll take your head -- his game day hour by -- and gotten more this week on the big presented --"
" Welcome to coach speak presented by -- got a great show for yeah. We're gonna have a number of great coaches for you today we got John Harbaugh for Baltimore Ravens. Jack Del Rio from Jacksonville Jaguars Mike Singletary San Francisco 49ers and Mike Smith from the Atlanta Falcons. We're talk about a number of things but interestingly to be damage hearing how the coaches -- The -- their message going into the week how they present it late in the week that Saturday night for the game. Just before the game they go out of the field and what their routines are during the course -- day game day itself. I'm joined now by John Harbaugh the Baltimore. Ravens. John what what you're retreat on Sunday -- manager -- you -- 1 -- kick off how does your days start and you work through the day."
" The Sunday the Sunday retain coach as you know that's that's pretty personal right I mean that's kind of over ten individual didn't know how to get -- doing it and it for me it's it's basically again get up we have we have we have chapel we have amassed that. Run concurrently before the the team breakfast so. You know I'll go to Ariza talked Riders or team chaplain and and actually what kind of share some ideas handled prior. An idea what the -- going to be about I go to mass. And we have otherwise it is great job which coaches and players both of those. That we do the team meal and try to eat whatever you really get down. Because you know you don't meet until late in the game sorts of late in the day it's kind of you know but sometimes that's as an afterthought. That what I do as I whittled -- go back to the room and I kind of break out the game plan so. The offensive game plan the defensive game plan the special teams game plan that the three quarters of put together you know you can stay at all through the week -- I sit in on meetings. Me talk recorders watching the practice watch practice tape but for me it's it's it's a chance to kind of go back through and have a sense of what those guys are thinking. In terms of calling the game that ties me and two time those guys together during the game. Making game management decisions and an every down and don't an idea out there -- you feel like you know hammered the around here keep the pressure coming. Whatever those things -- game I've got an understanding what. Their game plan is built around to do that he would keep tennis -- last idea. With that tickled to roster. The roster choices that plan and make him. And what direction we're thinking about going music comes down did this or that. I don't with the stadium. That and on the field for pregame and -- and basically I get nervous that's kind of what you do for the game."
" When you win a cup and that's murder that I Brewers the worse until the kickoff. When you meet with -- officials are you one of those guys that Lee lobbies them for -- you really gotta watch this and this boy these guys whole Lotta I mean do you want to really lobby officials."
" That's a great question coach had mentioned in the official that's a big part -- you know. I didn't ask for the I'd try to both ways you know I try to be friendly and try to be star and I try to get all the all the tips I try to say not just called the best way to see it. It doesn't seem to have any impact in any direction so I'm kind of stomp them out right now we've got some advice on that that pregame."
" My advice was whatever it is you're worried about don't bring it up because if you're worried about them holding you did you ask them about it that you're gonna be called for ten holding her. That always seemed either way it worked out like -- about the numbering in anything potential of this."
" That's a good point we'll follow that -- by system or touching on next time we get together the series. That's right we'll keep -- John I appreciate it good luck this week thanks Brian always fun."
" Now it's time for Billick won a one presented by Sam. You know I was I was doing the services go foreigners Houston Texans did -- the constant rotation of personnel. It reminded me of how we have evolved into the identification of personnel. And the standardization. Of the way that teams now identified personnel offensive group it. You're gonna see here Greg and ask you defensive coordinator -- 49ers. Had written all the different personnel groupings on his -- To combat. Three -- two types. And he identified the individual numbers that triggered those groups because obviously he was going to have specific calls based on who would personnel -- wise. And reminded me of how we have become more standardized and -- how people call for many people think wake up call their offensive groupings now. What they've evolved to a simply by identifying the number of backs of the game was the first. The number of tight ends in the game the second number. And it's assumed how many wide receivers so what used to be called regular personnel which would be to back tied into -- As you can see by the chart with two backs and tight end that's now when he -- personnel. When you have to tight ends in the game one back two tight ends were used to be called solo work tiger or aids in the old terminology. Mean people now just call that twelve personnel one back. The woman. Too tight ends with a two again it's assumed that the two wide receiver when you have three wide formation. A lot of people want three wide queens. Is he brought a number of different kinds of could use the the numbering system is simple it is eleven personnel one back. One tied and therefore assume three wide receivers so. What it did with standardized as players go one team to another and obviously have to adapt quickly terminology. It's standardized for many teams -- As you've got someone New Year's team they didn't know what zebra or tiger or -- was but they knew what 21 personnel eleven personnel twelve personnel. So it has standardized the way to try to find offensive personnel."
" Who can still a W focus on halftime adjustments as coach because Brian Billick presented by Samson continues."
" He's. Welcome back coach speak we're joined by Jack Del Rio head coach and a Jacksonville Jaguars. Jack a lot made of halftime adjustments. And sometimes I think more so -- that is realistic. Talk will be about what it is you get done at halftime when you --"
" Well you know you don't get much time you talking you know twelve minutes basically. The first thing we do will come off the field then and I'll try and touch bases with the each of the coordinators and ask them about some of their thoughts or give them me thought. In terms of hey you know this has been problematic all day are we ready for that but. You know most of that stuff is is going on during the course of the game you don't really wait till halftime talk about it. Most of that you trying to adjust on the sidelines throughout the throughout the course of the game. So it's really you know touching base with the coordinators. Want your players to. You make sure they spin hydrate. Used restroom they need to whatever the case may be and then and then lastly but very envious. You know briefly talk to the team -- okay look. No it's important we start this series. To begin the second half you know start fast start well with this who cover the kick. Both renowned defense office we take the ball don't get points. You'll be able to build them early those types of things."
" You know your -- coming up on. The game with up and appoint a very familiar -- Often talk a little bit about how the game planning for the approach changes a little bit when you're playing someone you you have such familiar."
" Well you know how they when both teams know each -- holes we do. It takes a little bit of different identity. If you're planning personally that you really don't know you're trying to do all you can throughout the course of the week on cover. All the information he can give us -- possible that a -- I think when you're when your duel with -- an opponent that -- twice a year. You know you're you're more into the the play calling personality. How you might set something up how you maybe have set something up in the previous game. In how you anticipate them adjusting and really. And really it's almost more of an. Part of the chess matches okay we did this the first time round -- how might they respond. We can anticipate that and now go to this move. Of those types of."
" Do you do you when you when you played the Titans the first time and -- played back to backs you know what's really in a relatively. Short period of time British or do you kind of game plan that first game thinking okay where do this this time and it will build on that or depending on what goes and I mean you kind of that the network."
" Now we didn't within seconds that way we played the first one just to be as good as we could be in that game but I think coming out of that game you know made some notes. Made some notes about things that that occurred during the game it. That we did to adjust maybe some things that we would anticipate they would do the next time around to a jobs. The some things that we show. In really try to anticipate where where's their next move you know how -- a cat owner you know some of the things we did with. Our bubble game or are slow game where were we we have vote then the -- a real tough run front. But the light outside and were taken advantage of that with our with our wide receivers on bubble screens and smoke routes and things like that. How big adjustment that's one of the things we're working on this week is is have a plan knowing that they've got to come back and combat and so."
" Sounds great Jack appreciate it -- good luck my pleasure Christian Bryan. As with -- from all the coaches that you children to create a theme early in the week carry it throughout the week and try to reinforce that the night for the game. And just before that while the field on Sunday."
" It starts on Wednesday in the first me to have -- team on Wednesday and message he traded cross. What this game's going to be all about and really what we're going to be all about. As we attacked -- on Sunday. Try to convert their very best team we can be so that we also try to part about our prima. Offensively because -- special thing. That is really a big part of the -- our coaching staff and a lot of times. Trying to put together if we do these three things were probably give the outcome that we right."
" I really try and build throughout the week what that message is gonna hit on -- around. Starting with the Wednesday morning meeting you know kind of set the tone for the week looking at where we are and where we need to be it was a team -- And trying to pinpoint. We've seen and math teacher in the vision that we I'm not trying to have a new Rockne speech you know Saturday night or Sunday morning before the game. Really more kind of the theme that I want our team approach throughout the week when we haven't. You know making sure that I I continued to put it in front of the guys over and over."
" We're joined right now by Mike Smith of the Atlanta Falcons might win or lose. What is it you try to accomplish. Right after the games over when you talked UT's what what your priorities win or lose."
" Well I think you have to be even keel. He can't be too high with the winner to with with the outcome that you don't like. And I always talk to our guys about. They give credit where credit is due. If we didn't get the outcome that we want you know our opponent was better than that day and you know if we if we do get the outcome that we want that we want to be. Very humble and how we you know how we approach it and that. And handle it that way and I think it's very important to stay even keel because there's so many ups and downs in a football game there's so many ups and downs and fifteen game season. You wanna try to stay as even as you can and be real with the guys and let them know that it. That was done we've got to move on win or lose we've got to move onto the next one you know come you know come Wednesday. You're -- you know you're in the game plan with those guys and wouldn't you know put the profit fell back together."
" And now the top one I've always said as a coach I know we coach is collectively would love to spend five minutes with a guy. That came up with the idea that you got within ten minutes after it was gut wrenching three hours you've ever had. Have to go stand for a thirty or forty media members and answer their questions but you do have to do it. What do you normally like to try to accomplish win or lose would you address the media right after game."
" Well the first thing that I try to do -- try to take about two or three and it just gather. Your affection and it. Moment and I you know after the ball game win or lose. Out Friday try to do gather my whip and I would put together -- quick note I'll work with my PR guy say it may be some of the things that are coming in you. In terms of questions and then now. You know try to answer honestly. By the the thing that the thing I'm don't get too emotional. You can oftentimes -- that you may regret. And that that ten or fifteen minutes after. -- Greta but the -- beer commercial hit at. I understand I understand they do in fact you know and I think that everybody have to -- Is that you'd that he."
" My goal went ahead -- in life and that's my story I tell me to no way if it depends on who want OK -- my right. Well you know what I thought it was but -- right -- and because they did. Note that Tommy was like a pair Mike Singletary might -- Bryant with New Orleans that you. Easy it. It."
" Much more to come including a coaching duties after a big game coach speak with Brian Billick presented by Samson continues after this."
" Welcome back it's now time foresee -- star segment we're joined by head coach Mike. Singletary of the Simpson scored forty niners and received star. Rookie Michael Crabtree. You know why did the game. And I would tell you I was apprehensive about how much he was going to be able to contribute I was concerned about him getting injured. Or possibly got -- handle the ball coffee about the and I got to take I don't know exactly how many snaps he took me with the whole game I was very impressed for first outing no training camp. He's gonna put us all restaurants start saying hey we can't -- I don't play the game."
" I don't know I don't -- horrible thought. But. Was very very pleased with so when he was able to accomplish. In his one of those guys that I think he's a rare. Rookies that comes in that is able to push him so. While he's not in training camp and really work his tail off and in no. His body and understand what he needs to get done and you studying and doing all the little things that he needed to do so was very pleased that he was able."
" To contribute like he was -- there is interest and when we sat -- would you would your coaches and players that came through for a production meeting the -- for the game. Virtually every one and and some of it on profit mentioned. Him during the week and a couple catches he made one in particular thing down the red zone you'd mentioned a couple other coaches as well. It was it was anything that every single one of them felt compelled them to make some type comment on his athletic --"
" The thing about America stands out news. Now. Hit the ball well but he's gonna do the little things that that you want receivers to do and and that you do trying coaching veterans to do. In terms of getting your feet down and in the right position. Catching the ball and really talk a new way before you begin to make you moves up field. Probably he anticipates who's next -- While he's catching the ball and catching the ball -- very easy thing for him to do which means the best exceptional for you and."
" As you make the transition and it was great to see Alex Smith come into play the way he did. Alex in in my from Mary you're with him and coming out of college. He does seem to be at his best much like -- college in more of a spread out offense. Is that something that you guys have to know that doesn't fit necessarily exactly with a model that you hope to come in with. But you have to adapt a little bit to go to his strength rather than some of the way double form."
" I I really believe that he will be able to adapt to to what we're trying to do mean when I watch you mean in practice. As he continues to mature quarterback. Not only is it. Situation that you had the other day -- playing catch -- football and and do you get guys spread out old police I think he can. We can bring it and we -- personnel would have tied it and to Weisman. And Leslie ball I think he really going to be. To complete quarterback he's gonna grow into into that. Shortly here."
" You know one thing that always admired about you might think as good as any coach ever been around you you have a clear sense of priority. About this job your family your personal life. We're talking all the coaches about the way -- on game day which talk will but I know what it's like I don't know home game you're you're done. You go home to -- and the seven kids and and what that's like for you on game day win or lose."
" Well I I gotta admit it's much better when you win. Obviously you go home and then. Everybody learned a great mood you're you wanna look at other football being and as a lot more talk about the kids are excited. When you lose a game I I think you have to. You just have to put it in perspective the first being here is like Mike. Football is not normal one OK you've you've been there you lost a game let's let's figure out tomorrow what you have to do win. The next one but while we're at home I'll -- remember. That the kids have not senior I have not seen it let's sit down and get caught up here and -- she puts things in perspective and you know that we sit down and make sure that we have a friendly cup."
" Now it's time for how I see it presented by Sam's Club. You know on the show and in any other number of shows you've heard coach after coach talked about the formula for success is -- Play good defense run the ball. And that's important certainly need to do those things but all you need to do -- look at the current state of the NFL today look at who's leading the given divisions as we approach the midway point of the NFL season. You can readily recognized you better have a quarterback because if you're gonna wind you're going to be a division I wonder if you're gonna wanna win a Super Bowl. You're gonna have to have one of those guys as we look at those leading the division at this point you can see in the NFC with a New York Giants she got Eli Manning and Minnesota Brett Favre. New Orleans it's Drew Brees and Arizona it's called Warner. Three of the four are definitely going to be hall of famers in the AFC you got Tom Brady in the media in New England. You've got Peyton Manning in the Indianapolis Colts boast to slam dunk hall of famers when it comes time in Cincinnati slash Pittsburgh is Nicole -- DA FC north you've got Carson Palmer. And Ben Roethlisberger. And that in Denver may be the one guy that could still established himself as a legitimate guy but maybe is the out -- this group is Kyle Orton. The point I'm making is that. Even though every coach would tell you stopping the run running the ball playing good defense is important that that -- defense driven league and defense wins championship offense sells tickets. Not today's NFL you better have one of those quarterbacks and he's going to be a hall of Famer all the better I'm Brian Billick this is my Samsung LED. And that's how I see what's what's -- continue on Wednesday with a college experiments. But she was to have full force."
" This week on the college experience. -- college football experience I've never seen it before and I've sat. The reverend -- it's hot college girls fighting mascots. And did we mention hot girls with pillows. There's a reason it's called the college experiment anymore then one and that's it."
" You have a question from -- here one of the coaches you can email coach speak at fox dot com. Or follow us on Twitter a coach -- Hope you enjoyed this week's version of coach -- join us next weekend while the coaches like Mike McCarthy in Green Bay Packers Wade Phillips to Dallas Cowboys. Excellent New York Jets. Jordan here every Tuesday at 1 o'clock on fox sports got called what -- benefits coach."
