" For instance it's. This we got a special coach read -- Brian Billick both offensive and defensive coordinator -- of -- lot of coaching staff. That is more coach -- would Brian Billick presented by stands up."
" I'm Brian Billick welcomed this week's version of coach speak. You know this week we've got a little bit different show for your -- start out with -- horrible -- a regular loser on the field and talk -- the about. They're talking lost to Cincinnati Bengals took -- loss. How they're going forward with the very unique schedule playing a Monday night game and coming back when Indianapolis Colts one short week. For also gonna get a chance to talk us and coordinate. We've got -- cutter was the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Greg my new scheme the defensive coordinator for example fiscal 49ers. And Brian van -- dissect your defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons so I think we'll get a little bit different."
" Look at the week's preparation and this very focused view of the coach's perspective offensively defensively as they come into this week's games. Our first guess they're -- because the defense of coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons Bryan been quarter thank you prior for -- and obviously Goodwin we the other day I'm interested in. You know come Monday you put the game behind you look at the tape -- show the players -- it and then you sit -- your desk -- and and find out about. What's the first thing you go about doing do you look at the game you look at the cut ups you look at. The our reports I mean how do you begin to formulate. What it is you wanna do against the offense."
" Well the first thing I like to do Brian is get familiar with their personnel. And that involves. Research and other statistics. In some case is with offensive linemen it's how many years they've started how long how many straight starts they might have had how many games they played in those kinds of things but I wanna get familiar but -- that. And their overall personnel and that and that comes from our pro personnel. From bare of we quality control our quality control. I joked and I will provide me information. Relieved with down and distance and that's where I kind of like to start. We have a breakdown first of series earned first down right into all the second down situations. All the third down situations. Like to get familiar but -- just see. The different personnel. That were about to see in those different down and distance. Situations like try to do a thorough job bear Brian I."
" Just did the Norman Saints came obviously teaming your division and they're a team they're very talented obviously they have a broad base personnel. They may bring in twelve personnel that's 11 back to tie downs. In three different fashions -- could be Reggie Bush contributor Thomas could be Mike Bell. They have different variations how much does that strike you as a defense coordinator. When you have a team that has that kind of multiplicity. Let's say are based out first and second medium. Yet they roll through 21 personnel to back one tight at three wide to tight they do a lot of personnel groupings how does that stretch she was a coordinator."
" Well I think that as it is as a coordinator you can give me a good feel for how you're going to handle each one of those personnel and you might even tagged up. You know twelve personnel bush for a -- New Orleans. Opposed to a twelve personnel Thomas. Oh and and from a coordinator him what you might treat those two back. Different in that personnel grouping. But I think what's interesting is in united united stated this is as I start today is how. They transition the personnel and your kind of leading into that in in a game how quick it happens. And how the coaches up hitters are trying to get that information to you as a play caller. And you know you've gotta be you've got to think fast."
" And you call the game from both -- on the field on the field. Why and I -- obviously different guys approach different ways while why do you like communicating the game from the game from the field rather up in the Booth."
" I think that for me. You know all -- a little bit more emotional. And that is true during the week. And I feel like it's specially during testing times I'd like to be there with the guys. If it didn't involve some some type of adversity. I'd I'd I do think there's a little but it -- advantage in that you know you don't have all your information -- study. Made out front you like you can't have. -- up in the Booth but for me just. I've always felt like. Just my style of coaching probably works better off for me as a leader on the field."
" Burt Brian and I appreciate it thanks so much for your time okay Brian thanks for that I would I would John Harbaugh had coached the Baltimore Ravens you know John. A lot of people for a long time voice talked about time of possession being -- But we both learned time of -- also has took the -- with points time possession and of itself. I'm most interest in your perspective as head coach you know hurry up offense is great but sometimes that run that clock off to quick talked about you guys who run Joe's doing a great job with some no huddle. Talk about the time component time of possession."
" When you tend to run some Ohio. Well it's a great point coach you've been through to force you know but. That the main thing is scored points in. You know the more points you scored the better -- can be -- Indianapolis go fifteen minutes and our main points are scored against Miami that's really the most important thing this week we did not do a good job with how possession it was twofold. Right it would get first downs. In the first half it didn't we and we were know how many times in and out runner earlier stuff. But we -- first out you're not gonna keep the ball and we couldn't get off the field. I mean it back within a nice job controlling the clock because they converted on third down. Kept chains -- had a couple long drives and put points and and both those drives and that you know you're down fourteen nothing. And and is it hard to control the clock because you know -- kind of game so. We try to control the clock we haven't done as good job of it as we have you know we did last year but it. It's it's not something we've done very well -- there have been times we've actually been ahead in our defense is playing well we speeded up our point. And we were trying to put him away. Conceivably score many points as we could kind of you know goals -- sometimes you do that sometimes united do other types start milking the clock now run the ball a little bit more. Screens completions no completions -- like runs if we can get completions and more control path you take your chance to run the clock a little more into it. Obviously the clock keeps running completions whether inbounds or out of bounds so just success on offense to me is what leads to. Time of possession a lot of the time possession that's -- he comes in offense that was stay on the field and defense that's able to get off the field and if you choose to no country choose to go hurry up. You may have an impact on your time of possession but the number of plays ends up being kind of back there if you lineup you've got 6577. To place. It's pretty exciting period a little if -- that -- wearing rings you're in trouble and conversely the defense."
" You you've got to Monday night game right yes against Cleveland. Right you got a Sunday game and then you're gonna come back and play Sunday night game so you've got -- a day late. And all game you come back tighter than normal Sunday but it's a late game. Talk -- come back to scheduling and nobody talks -- about your week. Playing on Monday night game than coming back from playing on Sunday."
" Well we try to do and that's kind of your coach the injury thing and has been recently what you do here but we try to get on schedule so. -- Cuba Thursday Friday Saturday as -- to worry Wednesday Thursday Friday. We will come in Wednesday. And we'll have area kind of prep daylight chance again. Introduced to the Browns a little bit and have a light practice we'll get our normal schedule look at the guys in there arrest which we really need. Couple couple physical games we're playing a team that's coming out of them by they're going to be very fresh. This is probably the tiring year and this situation -- from your team coming -- by what's really important that our guys get their legs. And her pop and others can sort of speak on Monday night so we're gonna need to shorten a practice little bit shorten -- perhaps a little bit. Make sure we're on our strongest on Monday then we come back with a short week against you like Indianapolis Colts -- just a fast team that on both sides of the ball can fly around. We're going to be out you know come off -- Monday night game. So we'll have to do a good job making sure our guys get all the mental work without too much physical work. And what -- started work on balancing that and then we're gonna come back against the Steelers. You know Kennedy and how it's gonna be so we got a stretcher and -- absolutely yeah it's going to be challenging."
" The job challenges is a good word for -- but that's the -- at the term we use coaches here's what his boy this is going to be on I would go back. Well John I appreciate a good look and will will talk again thanks Brian appreciate time."
" Much more on the way including the 49ers offensive coordinator Greg my new scheme that is more when coach speak with Brian Billick presented by Samsung return."
" He's. Welcome back coach speak we're joined by. Defense of coordinator for the and has co coordinators Greg ministry and this is -- C -- star segment and -- he would start this week is Patrick Willis Greg talk a little bit about. Patrick Willis as it inside linebacker when he brings you defense."
" Well I think the best thing about Patrick is he's. Not only a great player and in the sense of the physical tools but also from the mental standpoint of the game. Really comes in each game plan tries understand his job were the offer is trying to attack this defense. It just going through although some metrics. -- where exactly. The opposite and attack the defense. Great physical tools he's got speed he is vision. Can tackle in space. Has all the tools that you look for -- as an -- linebacker. What jumps out at me like Cory Lewis he seems to have that from recognition to transition into action is just almost instantaneous. Yeah that's the best thing is mostly Korean side linebackers and especially prepared his instincts are phenomenal. Even this past game just to see the option play and react. And attractive guy down in just just a little finer points of the game is sometimes it's hard to coach. He has a natural -- you know really picked those things up and you know C division see the sight lines he can really react. And it's good that he can run a 43 or four or whatever he ran."
" When you go through your schedule is your -- are on a typical Monday obviously you get through the review the previous game. Did you finisher your work with the players when you sit down at your desk for the first time on Monday okay now you're getting ready for the next opponent. Take us through that little bit and I mean do you look at entire game you look at the scouting report the cut at first what draws your attention first as you prepare for an opponent."
" Well depends from week to week sometimes they do the cut ups first look at exactly what the team's doing. You know in each personnel groups and and other times. Dependent upon that that particular point were planning usually watch show a full game or two or three your war. See exactly how the flow of the game goes and exactly how -- substitutions are going. The rhythm and pattern that is offered to coordinator likes and then after that I get back into the cut -- on first and second down. He goes from those things so. -- basically -- Monday. After we already did the review what I try to do is look at the cut up and figure out exactly what they try to tech in each group. And then after that get into the third downs and in short yardage red zone and all the other particular areas that need to be addressed."
" How could give me an example let's say open field first down. How many different. Defense is you might have on your plate caution how many how many defense is where you go into any given game plan on base down and distance like that."
" About three to four in -- based upon the team that we're playing. Usually PM ten dependent upon a personnel. Probably to zone and then probably one or two pressures me one man pressure once fires -- pressure one -- pressure. In in regards to that that's how we usually do it usually on first of this series. Same thing you know there might be a little bit carry over from. The previous. Down and distance but it usually two to three sometimes four. Calls for a situation."
" It you guys have gone to more of 34 alignment with what you're doing now talk a little bit about the versatility that brings you into the scheme that you."
" Well I think the best thing about -- 34 defense is from a quarterback's perspective or even from -- coordinators -- don't know exactly which side. Which players -- which two players are common. War from a side or they just he just have a little bit more versatility. It's not like -- defensive and -- his -- the ground. Now don't get me wrong I've been I grew up in 43 defense but. For my coaching career right I mean I like the 34 because there's so much versatility it. Bringing guys up the middle and haven't those guys drop out so here's combinations of bringing different guys from different positions. And sometimes it stirs a quarterback's mind thinking now."
" I Greg I appreciate it and thanks so much our brother be good. A few weeks ago we introduced the concept called on the clock talks we measure the difference between the big plays that he generates and gives up those are explosive plays twenty yards or more. And of course the turnover differential the difference between the turnovers should get the turnovers you give. Combining those two as the best barometer for success has -- where we're currently just pass midway he's on our clocks talks rating."
" As you can see here the top three teams through three pretty good football team in particular that who have topped the Indianapolis Colts normally things. Both undefeated you can clearly see why they're doing. Both are very explosive with Indianapolis having birdied ten plays went twenty yards or more -- Indianapolis supported. And giving up only fourteen point five respectively. Likewise. They -- plus seven and plus eight respectively with regard to turnover to. You can see why these two teams along with Philadelphia. Which proved very explosive. And also that's probably. Why they top the fox talks way. At the bottom and the Specter of unfortunately games seem like -- some of these teams struggled. To Cleveland and Oakland all the obvious reason interestingly -- here pretty good Arizona team down there. And look what that points out he would build a team. That has not been particularly explosive -- 21 plays of twenty yards or more they've given up 33 years ago minus six in the -- which category the third for Arizona and we said earlier that there's always a couple while Myers. They're turnovers in particular have come and closed in one -- two games. Clearly they struggle in those games like last week with a determined by the ball over had a great game against Chicago Bears. We're two weeks ago would play the very cute girl on the team. Turn the ball over a great deal you can see that it's feast or famine for the Arizona Cardinals and why they're down here in the fox Cotchery."
" Now it's time for how I see it presented by Samsung. You know at the end of the New York San Diego game we watched Philip Rivers orchestrated beautiful eight play eighty yard drive. To get the win for San Diego on the road in New York. And when you watch a quarterback like -- were operate. We said Warren who show I can't I can't remember a time when this league has been as deep at the quarterback position as we are right now. And there's a very clear line between those teams that have a quarterback and those who don't. But even among that group of gifted quarterbacks there's no lead group. That have the capabilities like we saw in the Philip Rivers to take control of the game in the most critical time. Take his team down the length of the field. In the most pressured of situations people like obviously Peyton Manning who we've seen brought his team back from -- circumstances. Tom Brady obviously Philip Rivers Ben Roethlisberger. Donovan McNabb. Brett Farr the number of quarterbacks that truly excel and have done up on a continuous basis. I think as we move along for the latter part of the NFL season. It that play of those a league quarterbacks that can really begin to. Bring about some of the separation that typically happens is we get close to the playoffs. And even more so I think it's going to be the real difference maker what we did in the playoffs and is going to be exciting to watch the easily quarterbacks. Go out one another. I'm Brian Billick this bank and on LED and that's how I see."
" Still to come -- coach -- Brian Billick presented by Samsung we'll discuss what goes into an offensive game plan that more after this."
" back to coach speak you know we coaches tend to come up with the most exotic verbiage in language you've ever heard. Anytime you hear -- play call you've got to be scratching your head going just exactly what are they talking about. In Billick won the one we're gonna talk a little bit about all those words me."
" You know a lot times I get asked about all the river ridge that goes into play call and they can get pretty -- Sometimes we coaches longer the call just because it makes us feel smart to be a little short ball -- long calls. Our break California an actual play called out -- sense of what each part of the play -- Is -- very typical once this is actually one of the short ones. What this says it begins was always the personnel. First thing you're gonna hear in this instance eleven personnel or if we've learned before him on our our our Billick one on one sessions the number of personnel. Three wives all right anytime we number the personnel grouping is that's become very involved in this league it begins with a number of backs but one. The number of tight end the second one. And therefore it's assumed that it took three wise if it's tiger it's what won back. Who tied it twelve personnel so you begin with the personnel eleven personnel three wise personnel. Queens personnel whatever your floor which allows for that you have to identify. Who's in the game. Next we're gonna tell you the formation. Okay we're gonna tell you weren't lineup. But I need to know. Strained right that happens to the other three by one alignment tells -- tied -- to go to the right. -- my wide receiver and playing her word ago. I've made then and here I don't have it here that you may put into motion. All right you may decide we're gonna go play right. Fake motion train right. HBO you train ride the short you're telling each individual. Whose -- going into motion what direction and where it's coming -- next year have it -- like that protection. This is obviously a pass play as a Warren telephone linemen the backs what the protection is in this instance it's a six man turn back protection. -- drives -- the same routes. And typically this won't happen any time we run a certain route combinations the rest of the routes or assumed sometimes we may go back poor route tree. And that particular play might be. 520. So now you're saying three wives -- eleven personnel. Train right -- right 528. Now you're told everybody exactly where to go. And then you might attack it with a particular call that you're bringing. Focus to the post well maybe your act you're changing the -- suddenly from what you normally do it hit a drive combination. So every part of the verbiage. Very specific to tell everybody who's in the game. -- I don't line -- what the basic protection and route combinations off."
" We're joined right now by -- cutter the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Dirk -- appreciate you joining us. You know we just did a piece on how convoluted some of the calls get with we author of coaches that -- you give me when your most convoluted longest like what they had to be just say kind of what's the toughest call you've gotten off."
" Well can change a little bit from week to week but just last week we had 10 that was dice right -- strong. Z return turn Tuesday donkey X -- check 111. I was alone enough -- I was alone who that that is."
" Let me ask you this and in having obviously coming out of the college game where you don't have that coach to quarterback communicators. How did that changed the verbiage for you to in the system that you called in college versus what you do now."
" Well I was criticized a lot as a college coach because I always wave my quarterback over I had old fashioned practice quarterback and he hurt people -- always mad -- me for bringing him over and you know my first couple years in the NFL -- from the press box and so everything had to go through our quarterback coach Mike Shula but this year I'm on the field. And boy that that's a coach to quarterback system is is. What a neat thing and I know all your years as a play caller that the things you can say to the quarterback and in that time a lot of it is really pretty awesome."
" When you look at an opponent like going into next week's game. What's the first thing you normally wanna get your hand around as you said you know you start with the personnel to formations but you usually most concerned about the Blair. You start worrying more about."
" Coverages fronts what's the first thing you start to formulate your mind yeah well again we have different coaches assigned to. To take the lead in different areas and coach coach Mike -- takes the lead for us and bullets in his. Is very thorough the lead the lead thing for me is is. Run downs -- for us. Well first and -- and second one to six and the reason I start with that is because that's the biggest chunk of your offensive calls. And so I wanna I wanna break people down and and see how they and how they line up how they stack up against our own personnel groups. You know what are they gonna do against when he won what are they gonna do in twelve what are they gonna do -- eleven what are they gonna do against 22 personnel. What's her front percentage what's their coverage for senate what's their blitz percentage. And then from there you can just kind of go to the you know your own personality of your offense and how you attack those different types of defenses."
" Talk to me a little bit about once you've got the bulk of the week behind you now. The mortar or the opening sequence of what you wanna call tell me a little bit about how you formulate that in your mind."
" Well what we do is we have our entire offensive staff on Thursday night after practice. We get together and we rank -- replay and call -- every play that we had installed that week. What how we rank those plays within the situation you mentioned. And sometimes we throw plays out. We we're not a big team a batting late in the week so by Thursday night we try to put it to bed. Put him in order based on all the different situations. And then from there we try to work on what we call our openers. We try to script the first twelve plays. First twelve run downs. And and we let the second and longs third and mediums third and shorts red zones so those fall as they made based on our rankings of the week. How how how we game planned them. But then all of that takes into into -- sometimes you you think he got the greatest idea ever any game plan -- you go out there practice and it looks like crap. And you know you do is you gotta take here's the way your guys are X acute now I think into into him back when you rank that stuff."
" I appreciated and thanks for taking the time with. I'll get right once with benefits continues tomorrow with the college experiment the he would they've gotten store for tomorrow."
" Sleep on the politics here. -- college football experience I've never seen it."
" Well that's it for this week's show going next week 1 o'clock on Tuesday. For coach speak we're gonna have Wade Phillips getting ready for big NFC east match up with the Washington Redskins and Rex Ryan taking his New York Jets who would judge. -- it title battle with the New England Patriots of that AFC east going to be a good game to talk about to join us next week."
